Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA)

Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is the U.S. Department of Defense’s official Combat Support Agency for countering weapons of mass destruction.

The DTRA mission is to Safeguard the United States and its allies from global weapons of mass destruction and improvised threats by integrating, synchronizing and by providing expertise, technologies and capabilities.

Mission: Formed in 1998 through the merger of the On-Site Inspection Agency (OSIA) and the Defense Special Weapons Agency (DSWA), DTRA safeguards America and its allies from chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosive weapons of mass destruction (WMD) by providing capabilities to reduce, eliminate, and counter the threat and mitigate their effects. DTRA develops new and expands existing bilateral and multilateral engagements; supports the cooperative elimination of WMDs abroad; improves the security and accountability of vulnerable nuclear, biological, and chemical material globally; continues to strengthen interagency and international partnerships; and strives to improve strategic global situational awareness to respond to emerging threats.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving 2020 #DTRA would like to thank all the men and women who are fighting valiantly on the frontlines of this global pandemic. President Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation became an official holiday allowing the country to take a moment of rest and gives thanks for what they had even amid the times.

From our Troops who are far away from their families to the many people throughout the country unable to visit their families this Thanksgiving season, we send our best wishes. As we come together around our tables, tents and dining facilities, we ask you to take a moment to send out a special Thanks to our courageous #AtomicVets.

This special group of Armed Forces Veterans
1. Participated in U.S. Nuclear Atmospheric Testing from (1945-1962)
2. Participated in U.S. Underground Nuclear Testing from (1951-1992)
3. Were part of the Occupation Forces of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
4. Were Prisoners of War held in the vicinity of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the conclusion of WWII

This Thanksgiving we are reaching out to the community to locate as many of our #AtomicVets AND their families to share information for eligible Veterans to apply for the Atomic Veterans Service Certificate #AVSC.

Our thoughts and best wishes are with you all this Thanksgiving, sending special thanks to our Troops and their families. Your courage is not forgotten!

"The Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s (DTRA) Chemical and Biological Technologies Department — in its role as the Joint Science and Technology Office (JSTO) for the Chemical and Biological Defense Program — has supported development of a new screening device that quickly informs clinicians whether a person has a bacterial or viral infection.

DTRA-JSTO’s effort to develop the screening device began in 2017, and clinical trials of the device are occurring in the United States, as reported at the February 2020 meeting of the Presidential Advisory Council on Combatting Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria."

The U.S. and Kazakhstan partner to build nuclear security capabilities through multifunctional training and facility upgrades: #DTRA's Global Nuclear Security (GNS) program partnered with the Kazakhstani National Guard to renovate a former Soviet military barracks--a sign of the past--into the Anti-Crisis Training Center (ACTC) to build Kazakhstan's capability to #DetectDeterDefeat nuclear and radiological threats. The ACTC will support training and cadre development and reflects U.S. and Kazakhstani commitment to nuclear site and material security.

For two years, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) transformed a dilapidated military barracks into the Anti-Crisis Training Center. This state-of-the-art facility replete with shooting simulators, vehicle simulators, workout rooms, dormitory rooms and classrooms equipped with the latest technological innovations was transferred to the Kazakhstan National Guard on 15 October. The “ACTC” is another example of the broad cooperation that has taken place between the United States and Kazakhstan over the past 26 years in the area of non-proliferation. This world-class facility provides Kazakhstan with a venue for its security forces to receive critical training on guarding its nuclear sites and responding to incidents within its borders, while ensuring the fruitful partnership between DTRA and the Kazakhstan National Guard continues well into the future.

On this 245th Birthday we want to wish the US Navy and its Sailors a glorious birthday and specifically thank our Atomic Vets who worked in silence for so many decades. #AtomicVets

October 13, 2020 marks the Navy's 245th Birthday. The United States Congress authorized the construction of the first Navy Frigates in 1774 to begin its rise to "Victory at Sea". From the USS ALFRED in 1774 to the USS KANSAS CITY.

The Navy's rich traditions and innovations are filled with a proud history of awe-inspiring missions to include discoveries that were so classified, many were unable to speak of their experiences to include the Atomic Bomb & Atomic Testing.

We want to ensure our Service Members and their Next-of-Kin are aware of the Department of Defense Atomic Veterans Service Certificate (AVSC) intended to recognize all the veterans who participated in the 185 atmospheric nuclear tests conducted by the U.S. between 1945 and 1962 as part of the development of the atomic bomb. Veterans who participated in U.S. nuclear tests are referred to as #AtomicVets. In addition, our POWs held near Hiroshima and Nagasaki toward the end of WWII and those who were repatriated near Hiroshima and Nagasaki are considered Atomic Vets, due to their potential exposure to residual radiation.
