The Fort Blackmore Volunteer Fire Department was incorporated in April of 1992 as a volunteer agency, becoming the 7th fire department in Scott County. We are a small department with all volunteer members, but we do our best and are proud of what progress we have made over the years. All our our members are trained in CPR and EVOC/EVDT (Emergency Vehicle Operators Course)/ (Emergency Vehicle Drive

r Training) if 21 or older. Some of our members also have FF1 and FF2, Haz-Mat Awareness and Operations, Vehicle Extrication, Farm Machinery Extrication, Rural Water Supply, NIMS and EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Training.

Cardinal News released a very interesting article pertaining to the financial crisis that rural Fire/EMS departments are in.

Bottom line to all of this is on the last page that we have provided below. The article states that "the state of Virginia has not seen an increase in fire programs funding since 1995".

In reality, how much has changed since 1995? Has your hourly pay increased since 1995? Has your household bills increased since 1995? Has the price for food increased since 1995? Has the cost of living increased since 1995?

If your answer is "Yes" to the questions above, then how do you (government officials, local/state) expect your Fire/EMS Services to survive.

We at FBVFD truly appreciate all the donations we receive from the community and the funding that the county provides us.

It just makes it hard on everyone when state and federal governments implements mandated requirements on our small departments to keep up with. We have to keep our equipment and our gear up to date the same way these multi-million dollar big city departments do.

It's either keep up with the times or shutdown.
