With the Grammy Awards coming up this Sunday, takes a look at the Exchange’s musical past. In storage at Dallas Headquarters are plaques for gold or platinum records such as Pat Benatar’s “Crimes of Passion” (1980); Alabama’s “Feels So Right” and REO Speedwagon’s “Hi Infidelity” (both 1981), the Police’s “Synchronicity” (1983), Anita Baker’s “Rapture” (1986), the single “Be Our Guest” from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” (1991) and more.
Some of the albums—Journey’s “Frontiers” (1983), Phil Collins’ “No Jacket Required” (1985), Mariah Carey’s 1990 debut, Amy Grant’s “Heart in Motion” (1991) and Ice Cube’s “Death Certificate” (also 1991)—are enshrined in a display on the second floor of the headquarters building.
In 1977, the Exchange opened its first individual record shop, the Music Box, at the Nuernberg Area Exchange. Although PXs and BXs sold records, the stand-alone store was introduced to feature the personal touch customers got from better record shops back in the States.
The store had the largest selection in Europe, with 1,500 titles. Music Box purchases were placed in distinctive bags that were also inspired by U.S. record stores.
In October, Flashback Friday wrote about Lou Stallman, who was a cafeteria worker in the ‘50s at the Manhattan Beach Air Force Station Exchange and went on to co-write receive a Grammy nomination for co-writing “It’s Gonna Take a Miracle.” Stallman, Teddy Randazzo and Bobby Weinstein wrote the song in 1965, but the Grammy nomination came along in 1982, when Deniece Williams covered the song.
There’s at least one other successful songwriter in Exchange history. Patrecia McCurdy, a clerk-stenographer in the Command and Public Relations Division of the Exchange in the ’70s, wrote songs under the name Patty Jackson (usually in collaboration with Jerry Abbott, a Dallas-area songwriter), including “I Don’t Dream About You Anymore,” which was recorded by Freddy Fender, “Tonight She’s Giving Her Love to Him,” recorded by Joe Stampley, and “When it Comes to Cowgirls,” recorded by Stampley and Moe Bandy.

to 12 years ago this week—protests against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s regime broke out in Egypt, where the streets of downtown Cairo were filled with thousands of protesters. Mass arrests, injuries and a few deaths occurred during the protest.
Two associates from the Kaiserlautern Military Community Center at Ramstein Air Base in Germany were helping with inventory the Exchange’s store in the U.S. Embassy, just steps away from the protests. About 200 people sought refuge in the embassy. Winds blew tear gas over the building, but no injuries were reported.
Sherif Ibrahim, who managed the Exchange store in the embassy, and his team worked around the clock to keep the store open—and to provide food to people seeking refuge in the embassy. They also made sure the KMCC associates were safe while looting, fires and overwhelming noise were occurring outside.
Then-U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton congratulated Ibrahim for his team’s work in supporting embassy operations.
The Exchange recently marked 80 years of support in the Middle East and Southwest Asia. Cairo was also the site of the Middle East’s first documented PX, which opened Nov. 22, 1942. A month later, a PX opened in the Iranian desert to serve the first U.S. forces deployed to Iran during World War II. It was austere in more than just location: For its first eight months, it had no refrigeration, meaning no cold drinks or fresh meat.
The Exchange still operates a store at the Cairo embassy, as well as more than a dozen stores in the Southwest Asia region encompassing Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

I Served My Country and was Terminated for Serving Those Who Serve Our Country

To the Leadership of AAFES
I’m writing this letter in concern of how I was treated at the Exchange Fort Bliss this past weekend.

I’m a U.S. Army Disabled Veteran who owns the AT Ease Hair & Skin Care Products line based in Plano, Texas. With an Award Winning team of licensed Barbers and Cosmetologist with over 57 years combined experience in the beauty industry servicing customers, celebrities, and high profile clientele, training, educating, platform artist work and hair show expos.

AT Ease Hair and Skin Care signed up to be a vendor at the Fort Bliss Exchange the weekend of April 1-3, 2022.
Eager to be of service educating the soldiers, their families, and the civilians stationed there, on proper grooming, maintenance, and styling techniques when it comes to our diverse (All Hair and Skin Type)products made with natural ingredients that cleanse, moisturize, repair, and heals hair and skin. Also helping pinpoint their concerns when it comes to Pityriasis capitis(Dandruff) or Pseudofolliculitis barbae(Razor Bumps), by demonstrating our products and tools.

Honestly I don’t know what to feel, as a Veteran, Business Owner, and Leader who strives to do things right, who understands rules, regulations, morals, and values.

Knowing AAFES Mission Statement to provide quality merchandise and services to its customers at competitively low prices and to generate earnings which provide a dividend to support morale, welfare and recreation programs.
AT Ease Hair and Skin Care Mission is providing quality hair and skin care products, merchandise, and service along with building the morale of those we come in contact with. We’re Built On INTEGRITY!

On April 1, 2022 we arrived on Fort Bliss at 0730 after getting a pass we got to the Exchange around 0745 to the place where Mrs. Juanita Rosales said the tables would be set up, finding nothing I called her cell phone and business line several times with no answer, then 0815 I emailed her to tell her I was where she told me to be, 0822 I got a email from her telling me to come to where she was. After completing the paperwork and arriving back to the Exchange we started moving in and setting up. I went to sign out the tablet to prepare for the event, tried signing in and could not, so at 1110 I called Mrs. Rosales again several times with no answer. Then once I got her she said she had not started the event and would email the password within 15 minutes. The password was sent at 1215 with our first sale at 1218.

Less than a hour in a half of being of service to the AAFES customers who were at that time African American Soldier’s and Civilians ranked from O-3, E-9, GS-15 with great service, product feedback, and sales upwards of $230 our trip was cut short by a very unprofessional verbal termination of contract by Mrs. Juanita Rosales.

Mrs. Rosales asked to speak with me, and said “security said I was cutting hair and I’m not suppose to be cutting hair, it was not apart of the contract of a short term vendor and I wasn’t charging them and that I need to turn in the tablet pack my things and go now!” I tried to explaining to Mrs. Rosales ( I wasn’t charging for haircuts and our contract was for things being sold) this is sometime part of our sales demonstration, to show how the products and tools work in action, and that we did it at the previous Exchange with no issues. Furious and shaking with a very aggressive tone she repeated…..”Get Your Things And Go, my manager Mrs. Graciela Tunon already told me to terminate your contract”, I asked her to calm down and why are you so upset, she said I’ve never had to terminate anyone, I said it’s okay I understand, at the time a female E-9 soldier was in the middle of her demonstration and was demanded to get out of the chair by Mrs. Rosales.

My team drove over 1400 miles/24 hours round trip with fuel and lodging cost well over $1400 to be terminated without warning knowing how far we traveled was very DISAPPOINTING.

Fort Bliss population has over 100,000 troops family members, and civilians who call Fort Bliss home, its hard to believe I was terminated for demonstrating on 2.5 people.

If someone could reach out to me regarding this matter it would be much appreciated.

Respectfully,
Ozell D. Graham
CEO
