Before you throw out your tree this holiday season, check with your local park service or recycler to see if they are collecting them. Holiday trees have many uses - from being chipped into mulch to supporting aquatic habitats. #Recycle U.S. Army Reserve

Holiday Meals and Icy Roads: Winter Stormwater Pollution Concerns

The winter season is usually characterized by holiday dinners and cold weather. Holiday dinners, snow, and icy roads may increase the risk of two stormwater pollutants: de-icing salts and FOGs.

Fire and DPW personnel who worked the Dolan Fire operations and responded to a mass casualty incident from the fire were honored in an award ceremony this morning. Several others also received awards from Col. Charles Bell and HHC 1st Sgt. Clinton Unger, and the entire ceremony (almost-internet dropped) was put out on Facebook Live. Congratulations to each and every one!

Congratulations US Army Garrison Fort Buchanan for winning the 2020 Federal Energy and Water Management Award!

From FYs 07-19, Fort Buchanan reduced its water consumption by 42 percent through innovative water-saving initiatives including the installation of rainwater harvesting systems. These achievements were the direct result of a unique Integrated Strategic and Sustainability Planning process employed in FY18 to develop the Fort Buchanan Strategic Plan. The team also developed an Installation Energy and Water Plan that maps out energy and water efficiency and conservation measures with a microgrid, battery storage, and other integrated renewable plans to achieve at or near net zero energy and water status.

The mud nests of the cliff swallow decorate many buildings here, including this one at the Equipment Concentration Site 170. They are colonial nesters, and do a spectacular job of catching insects on the wing. The gourd-shaped nest can contain 900 to 1200 individual mud pellets, and is lined with grass when construction is finished. They rebuild and add to their mud “apartments” each spring when they return from their wintering grounds in South America. Our environmental division is tasked with protecting our natural and cultural heritage while maintaining mission-essential landscapes for training. It's a great partnership of stewardship and military readiness! #WildlifeWednesday

Real vs. Fake: Which tree is better? Most artificial trees are not recyclable and end up in the landfill. Carefully using trees from our forests helps fight climate change and supports local communities. Ask your recycling center about pick up options so your real tree can be chipped into mulch or composted after the holiday season. #GreenTheSeason #USArmyReserve

U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center Huntsville

The Energy Resilience and Conservation Investment Program, or ERCIP, gives stakeholders from anywhere in the Army a direct path to secure funding for military construction designed to increase energy efficiency, employ renewable energy sources, reduce energy costs, and increase energy resilience and security.

Before a stakeholder—such as an installation in need of such a project to fulfill the Army’s energy resilience requirements—submits a project proposal to the Office of the Secretary of Defense to compete for funding, it is the job of Huntsville Center’s ERCIP validation team to lend technical support and planning guidance by validating the project.
