I have learned and experienced so much during this process. I have worked to bring the Coroner’s Office out of the shadows and show what a proactive Coroner’s Office can look like. I have brought to light questionable practices and polices to be changed. I have discussed in detail the importance of accessible and meaningful data and statistics combined with thorough analysis and discussion. I have expressed the need for a Family Advocacy Program within the office to assist all loved ones through the grieving process and provide essential access to resources. And I have begun building the partnerships needed for mutual success and improvement of public health and safety.
I am grateful for the support, mentorship, and love I have received along the way. I have listened to stories of tragedy, experiences of hopelessness, and confusion with coroner processes, and we have worked through potential solutions and courses of action. We can redesign the Coroner’s Office to better serve everyone and operate with dignity, integrity, and respect.
My plan to be a proactive coroner began this summer with building new partnerships and supporting our community. I celebrated with SummitStone Health Partners for their 65th Anniversary. I stood with my friend and Former Larimer County Death Investigator, Rafael, at Ft. Collins Pride and supported NoCo SafeSpace Lgbtqia+. I celebrated diversity, equity, and inclusion by networking with the NoCo Latino Chamber of Commerce, attending celebrations of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, and attending a symposium on “Building Equity Practices into Hiring.” I celebrated Houska Automotive Service, Inc. 70-year anniversary and donated blood at their annual blood drive. I supported fundraisers with Alliance for Su***de Prevention of Larimer County and Imagine Zero. I supported Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. I discussed safety Colorado State University for National Campus Safety Awareness Month. I participated in Bike to Work/Everybody Bike Day and discussed evidence based and data driven approaches to traffic safety and infrastructure improvements. And so much more!
My success and my vision for the future of the office is bolstered by my experiences within the Larimer County Coroner’s Office, Adam’s County Coroner’s Office, and with Denver County’s Chief Medical Examiner. My ability to successfully run the Coroner’s Office and interact competently with the courts/legal system, families, and the community is grounded in my academic successes and legal education.
Thank you,
Stephen
