2019 Salute to the Nation

The 2019 Salute to the Nation demonstration showcased the 10th Mountain Division's history and modern capabilities.
The 10th Mountain Division has spent more time in combat since 9/11 than the entire time the WWII era division existed. We are proud of our history and proud to make the #ClimbToGlory!

Our 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry and 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion provided the spectators with quite a show as they showcased the #10thCAB's aviation capabilities by executing extreme maneuvers with our Apaches, bringing Soldiers to the fight with our Black Hawks and sling-loading howitzers for rapid-firing artillery with our Chinooks!

Thank you to all of our #FalconSoldiers who made this such a special event for our division!

Our #10thCAB was deeply honored to host two very special Vietnam War Veterans who came to speak during this year's 10th Mountain Division Salute to the Nation ceremony; (RET) Army Colonel Dave Johnson and (RET) Major Bruce Grable.

Grable retired from our than 10th Aviation Brigade in 1989. During his service in Vietnam as a Chinook Aviator, then 1LT Grable, answered a distress call from then Maj. Dave Johnson after Johnson's helicopter was shot down inside Cambodia. Flying a mission in Vietnam, Grable and his crew heard the distress call and without hesitation flew into Cambodia to rescue Johnson and the other crew. Johnson last saw Grable in Vietnam and subsequently submitted him for the Distinguished Flying Cross, which Grable received. Grable and Johnson's reunion was the topic of an episode on PBS' "We'll Meet Again" which aired in November.

As part of their tour of the Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield, both Veterans got a welcome surprise when they saw a familiar face as they stepped into the 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion's Bravo Company Hangar, the CH-47 Chinook, almost unchanged since the time they flew in them back in Vietnam. Cpt. Frank Wheeler, the commander of bravo company, extended a warm welcome to the famous Veterans and gave them both bravo company #MountainMover patches, honoring their visit. Chinook Aviators and crew members gathered around the war heroes and their wives and spoke with them, sharing their experiences unique to this special aircraft.

Check out this video about yesterday's 10th Mountain Division (LI) Annual Remembrance Ceremony. The Carver Family were the #10thCAB's special guests and we were deeply honored to have them with us.

Today the 10th Mountain Division hosted the Annual Remembrance ceremony in Memorial Park for Gold Star Families and Distinguished visitors.

In attendance were Mitchell K. Carver Sr. and Judy Carver, parents and members of #10thCAB's Gold Star Family. Their son, CW3 Mitchell K. Carver Jr., was an OH-58 Kiowa instructor pilot and maintenance test pilot who was assigned to 1-10 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion.

On January 13th, 2006, while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his aircraft was shot down after coming under attack by enemy forces using small arms fire near Mosul, Iraq. CW3 Carver and CW2 Kyle Jackson both lost their lives in the ensuing crash.

Every year, the Carvers make the trip to attend the Annual Remembrance Ceremony held at #FortDrum. This year, 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry had the honor to escort them to points of interest around the installation and gave them the opportunity to try out the Longbow Crew Trainer AH-64 Apache Flight Simulator.

We want to sincerely thank the Carvers for everything they have given our brigade, our division, and our country. We will never forget their sacrifice.

2-10 Assault Helicopter Battalion (#Knighthawks) flew one of their UH-60 Black Hawks to Black River Elementary during the school's Field Days, where several vehicles from the 10th Mountain Division were put on display to let the children see them up close.

Being the representatives for #ArmyAviation to our #NorthCountry neighbors is a point of pride to all of us here at the #10thCAB. By bringing our helicopters to local schools and allowing students to ask questions about them, we are showing them how we protect and serve our Nation as well as inspire future Soldiers and leaders.

6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry has volunteered to help restore the AH-1 Cobra which has served as a static display in front of the Sackets Harbor NY American Legion Family Post 1757 for the past 19 years.

Sgt. Russell Armstrong, an aircraft structural repairer from the 6-6 Heavy Attack Reconnaissance Squadron (HARS), Delta Company, and his wife, Celeste, were attending a charity event at the legion a year ago and got to view the Cobra up close. As a Soldier trained in identifying aircraft structural damage, Sgt. Armstrong saw the wear that had been sustained from constant #NorthCountry weather and knew what needed to be done to restore the aging attack helicopter.

After a lengthy process involving permissions to work on the helicopter, Sgt. Armstrong succeeded. With the help of a few friends from delta company, they are working to help the legion bring the display back to its former glory.

Amazing work, #TFShooter! We hope to see the final result during the upcoming fourth of July weekend!

This past weekend our 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion flew one of their HH-60M MEDEVAC Black Hawks to the Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways, Inc. at the Wellesley Island State Park to educate them about #ArmyAviation and the importance of flight medics.

The flight crew included Maj. Ashlie Christian, the #PhoenixBattalion's Executive Officer; Cpt. Hannah Cerney, commander of 3-10's headquarters company, and Staff Sgt. Jenny Tario, a flight paramedic with 3-10's #DUSTOFF Company.

Together, they shared their experiences about aviation and combat medicine with young girl scouts, hopefully sparking an interest that will lead to more female Aviators and flight paramedics in our military.

It was a bittersweet moment last week when two of our #FalconSoldiers, Maj. Thomas Dolce, our #DUSTOFF commander, and Sgt. First Class James Webb, the #10thCAB Equal Opportunity Advisor, flew one last time above the #NorthCountry as 10th CAB Soldiers.

As farewell flights go, you couldn't have asked for a better one. They were able to fly above Niagara Falls then Buffalo and Jamestown, NY.

Thank you, gentlemen, for all you have done for this Combat Aviation Brigade. We wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors! #FlyToGlory!

3-10GSAB, This is the ACFT

Being in our #Army means always giving maximum effort. We do this not only for ourselves, but also for the #FalconSoldiers to our left and right.

This week, 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion conducted the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), a replacement for the almost 40-year old Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). With more events focused on assessing combat readiness, the ACFT will change the way Soldiers conduct Physical Training #Army wide. We will be more #Ready, and more #Lethal than ever before.

This morning our 10th Mountain Division Commander, Major General Brian Mennes, visited 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry in the middle of their aerial gunnery qualifications to see how the Heavy Attack Reconnaissance Squadron (HARS) added to the mission readiness of the division.

Not content to view the action from the ground, our CG was invited to receive AH-64 Apache Simulation Training before flying as a co-pilot with 6-6's Squadron Master Gunner, CW3 Mike Gordon, to Range 23 to get some practice firing the Apache's 30mm chain gun and rocket launcher.

Good shooting, sir!

Stay tuned for a video showing our #TFShooter Apaches in action.

On June 1, 2009, President Barack Obama issued Proclamation No. 8387 for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. The President pointed to the contributions made by LGBT Americans both in promoting equal rights to all regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and in broader initiatives. The President ended the proclamation by calling upon the people of the United States to "turn back discrimination and prejudice everywhere it exists.”

Diversity and inclusion are readiness imperatives for the #10thCAB and our #Army; we rely on our diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and expertise to enable us to address the complex challenges of the global security environment.

Today, the 10th Mountain Division and the #10thCAB had the privilege to help provide a fitting military funeral for a very special Army Veteran. The last of the Mohawk Code Talkers of WWII, Louis Levi Oakes.

6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry provided a team of nine Soldiers to act as pallbearers and honor guard to render the rifle volley that accompanies a traditional military funeral.

Present during the funeral was the commander of the 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion, Lt. Col. John P. Miller III.

"It was an absolute honor to be a part of the nation's final farewell to Mr. Oakes," said Miller. "His contribution to the success of our allied forces during World War II is immeasurable. He saved lives and secured a safer world for all of us. Our thanks seem small in comparison to his sacrifice, but we can never stop expressing our gratitude for his important work. Today, the 10th Mountain Division was privileged to honor Mr. Oakes with a fly-over executed by 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion. As the funeral service concluded, three Black Hawks and two Chinooks climbed over the tree line on the edge of the cemetery. The image was awe-inspiring. In combat, helicopters bring Soldiers home, home from battle, home to where they belong. Today we helped bring Mr. Oakes home."

Oakes friends and Family from across the Akwesasne Reserve and beyond came to pay their respects, including Oakes's own American Legion Post 1479, who stood by this amazing individual for many years.

Today, our nation remembers and honors the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

The people of Henderson, New York, invited our 277th Aviation Support Battalion to participate in their #MemorialDay parade. After the festivities, a wreath was laid at the Henderson War Memorial and the Command Sergeant Major of 277th ASB, CSM Carl Miller, spoke to the public about the immense sacrifice undertaken by this Nation and its Soldiers, in the name of freedom.

"Take a moment, whether in prayer or reflection or both, to recognize and thank those who are no longer able to hear your gratitude for their immeasurable and invaluable gifts of freedom and liberty that they have given us," said CSM Miller.

Enjoy this day with your Family and friends, #Falcons.

Last week, two of our #10thCAB Soldiers participated in the 10th Mountain Division Light Fighters School Best Warrior Competition, a challenging chain of events held across #FortDrum for five days.

Not only did these Soldiers endure rigorous physical strain against ruck marches and obstacle courses, they also had to prepare their minds to stand before a panel of sergeants major during a Soldier and Non-commissioned officer of the Year Board.

We want to thank Spc. Johnathan Womack and Staff Sgt. Makerdi Charlery of 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion for their hard work and dedication, they have been named #10thCAB's Soldier and NCO of the year!
