The 85th Mountain Infantry Regiment’s active service dates back to its activation as part of the 10th Mountain Division (Light) in August 1943 to its deactivation in November 1945 - both in Colorado. The regiment trained for survival and combat in the winter mountain conditions in Colorado, Texas, and Virginia. Following this training, the Regiment deployed overseas at the end of 1944, arriving in Naples, Italy, on January 13, 1945. The Regiment joined the forces assembled to attack the German strongholds in the Apennines Mountains. In three major offensive attacks, with heavy casualties, these forces crossed the Apennines from south to north, entered and crossed the Po River valley, and effectively ended the war in Italy. The 3rd Battalion, 85th Mountain Infantry Regiment was reactivated on Fort Drum in April of 2007 in order to have 10th Mountain Division Soldiers serve in a historic regiment during their recovery. Currently the 3-85th MTN IN serves as the premier center for the treatment of Wounded, Ill, and Injured Soldiers across Fort Drum and the greater Northeast region.

Mission: 3-85th MTN IN (WTB) provides mission command, administrative support and services, quality prime care, and case management services for Soldiers qualifying as Soldiers in Transition; synchronizes and facilitates quality medical care, clinical care, disposition and transition of Soldiers qualifying as Soldiers in Transition to promote readiness to return to military duty or transition to Civilian life, all IAW the Army’s Comprehensive Transition Plan (CTP).

The new year has brought with it new changes to who can access services here on Fort Drum! Eligible veterans can now shop at all Exchange facilities, the Commissary and access several FMWR facilities. Previous eligibility was limited to retirees and veterans with 100-percent disability. The change opens access to veterans who are Purple Heart recipients, Medal of Honor recipients, former prisoners of war or veterans who have any service-connected disabilities, as well as primary caregivers for veterans enrolled in the VA Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers.

Those interested in visiting these facilities must first stop in the Visitor Control Center at the Lt. Gen. Paul Cerjan Gate (Main Post Gate) for initial vetting. Please see this article for all the information about how you can take advantage of these new access options: https://bit.ly/2Qx3prO
