This past week has been cloudy with 100% chance of steel rain as our Battalion Mortar Platoon has been hard at work providing indirect fire support in order to enhance force protection and base defense across the Combined Joint Operations Area - Afghanistan (CJOA-A). Unlike a traditional rifle platoon, the Mortar "Thunder" Platoon usually conducts decentralized operations, often operating in small 3-5 man teams hundreds of miles apart, executing indirect fire missions with their 81mm and 120mm mortar systems under day and night time conditions. When they aren't hanging rounds, you can usually find them honing their individual Soldier tasks by conducting Expert Infantryman Badge (EIB) training.
