Can you smell what the Polar Bears are cooking?!? PFC Alejandro Torres lighting up the competition.

The chefs at Commando Cafe: Dining Facility of 2BCT, 10th MTN Division served up the competition in an in-house Chef of the Quarter cook off! What happens when you let them have free reign of the kitchen and face a panel of judges?

Congratulations to PFC Alejandro Torres of 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry "Polar Bears, Pro Patria" and SGT David Adams of 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, the winners of the junior and senior chef competition respectively (the winning dishes are pictured).

Well, the Polar Bears just kicked butt for the last two weeks completing Platoon live fires, squad competitions, and a leader walk and shoot. About to finish this off with a short little 25 mile foot march back to the HQs followed by some impact AAMs. One hell of a way to end two great weeks of training. Standby for photos.

Discipline is the foundation of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry). The few Soldiers within our formation that break the law will be held accountable through the appropriate administrative or criminal process. Before making a bad choice, call a battle buddy or a leader for help.

Polar Bear Hero of the Week:

This week we highlight SSG Robert Charles Murray, a Polar Bear and Medal of Honor recipient that made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Republic of Vietnam.

SSG Murray spent his early years on Marion Avenue in the Bronx, NY. He entered Harvard Business School after attending Fordham University but left early to join the Army (he was inducted into the Fordham University Hall of Honor in 2014). On June 7, 1970, SSG Murray was serving as a squad leader with Company B, when a member of his squad tripped an enemy grenade. “Staff Sgt. Murray unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own safety,” reads his Medal of Honor citation, “threw himself on the grenade, absorbing the full and fatal impact of the explosion.” He was 23 years old. Vice President Gerald Ford presented the Medal of Honor to Murray’s family in August 1974. His citation reads;

SSG Robert C. Murray, (New York, New York) Company B, 4th Battalion, Hiep Duc, 7 Jun 1970*
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pride in presenting the Medal of Honor (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Robert Charles Murray, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a squad leader with Company B, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, in action against enemy aggressor forces at Hiep Duc, Republic of Vietnam, on 7 June 1970. Staff Sergeant Murray's squad was searching for an enemy mortar that had been threatening friendly positions when a member of the squad tripped an enemy grenade rigged as a booby trap. Realizing that he had activated the enemy booby trap, the soldier shouted for everybody to take cover. Instantly assessing the danger to the men of his squad, Staff Sergeant Murray unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own safety, threw himself on the grenade absorbing the full and fatal impact of the explosion. By his gallant action and self sacrifice, he prevented the death or injury of the other members of his squad. Staff Sergeant Murray's extraordinary courage and gallantry, at the cost of his life above and beyond the call of duty, are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the United States Army.
