Polar Bear Hero of the Week:

This week we honor not one, but seven heroes that have served and sacrificed for our storied Battalion.

On 12 May 2007, these Soldiers, all assigned to D Company, sacrificed for their fellow Polar Bears at the time of their greatest need.

SFC James D. Connell Jr of Lake City, Tennessee; SSG Alex R. Jimenez of Lawrence, Massachusetts; SGT Anthony J. Schober of Reno, Nevada; CPL Joseph J. Anzack Jr. of Torrance, California; SPC Byron Wayne Fouty of Waterford, Michigan; PFC Daniel W. Courneya of Nashville, Michigan and PFC Christopher E. Murphy of Lynchburg, Virginia.

In August 2006 the Battalion departed Fort Drum, NY for a 15 month deployment to Iraq. The Battalion was to be based out of Forward Operating Base Mahmudiyah, southwest of Baghdad, in an insurgent controlled area known as “the Triangle of Death”. The Battalion Task Force was the Brigade main effort in the fight to destroy the deeply entrenched enemy, gain control of the territory and win the support of the population. Working with their Iraqi Army counterparts, Task Force 4-31 became a model of contemporary counterinsurgency operations. The Battalion established six patrol bases, 17 battle positions, and assisted the Iraqi Army with the establishment of many more. Together the Battalion conducted over 50 air assault operations, three amphibious operations and fired more than 300 fire missions to destroy the enemy. Despite conducting relentless combat operations against the enemy, the Polar Bears also worked to improve the community by improving schools, roads and irrigation canals.

SFC James Connell, SSG Alex Jimenez, SGT Anthony Schober, CPL Joseph Anzack, SPC Byron Wayne Fouty, PFC Daniel Courneya and PFC Christopher Murphy all sacrificed their lives helping to secure a better life for the Iraqi people and providing security for their brothers in arms. It was due to the dedication to duty and heroism of Soldiers such has these, the Battalion was awarded the Valorous Unit Award for

“Extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. During the period 16 August 2006 to 25 June 2007, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment and its subordinate units displayed extraordinary gallantry in action against an armed enemy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in and around Yusufiyah, Iraq. The unit’s professionalism and dedication to mission accomplishment went above and beyond the call of duty and contributed immeasurably to the success of Multi-National Division-Baghdad and Multi-National Division-Center. Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflects distinct credit upon the unit, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, the 10th Mountain Division and the United States Army”.

Polar Bear Hero of Week.
CPL Darell D. Stark enlisted in the United States Army on 5 March 1941. One month later, he was shipped off to Manila, Philippines to join the 31st Infantry Regiment. On 8 December 1941, Japanese planes attacked U.S. military installations in the Philippines. After the landing in northern and southern Luzon, the Japanse pushed rapidly toward Manila. CPL Stark and the 31st Infantry covered the withdrawal of the American and Philippine forces to the Bataan Peninsula. Despite starvation, disease, no supplies, obsolete weapons, and often inoperative ammunition, the peninsula's defenders fought the Japanese to a standstill for four months. The Bataan Defense Force surrendered on 9 April 1942. CPL Stark among the survivors, were herded into columns and marched 68 miles north to various POW camps. Many died of exhaustion, disease, and random execution along the march. Their trek, marked by the extreme brutality of the Japanese guards, become known as the Bataan Death March. In the three and a half years to follow, CPL Stark was forced to labor in various Japanese POW camps. In August 1945, CPL Stark was liberated from a camp in Toyama, Japan. Roughly half of the 1,600 members of the 31st Infantry Regiment who surrendered at Bataan perished while prsioners of the Japanese. Pictured are the boots and pants CPL Stark was wearing at the time of his liberation. They are displayed in the BN HQs today. Pro Patria!

Polar Bear Hero of the Week.

SSG Robert C. Murray, Company B, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment.

Location: Near the village of Hiep Duc, Republic of Vietnam. 7 June 1970.

SSG Murray distinguished himself while serving as a squad leader with Company B. SSG Murry's squad was searching for an enemy mortar that had been threatening friendly positions when a member of the squad tripped an enemy grenade rigged as a booy trap. Realizing that he had activated the enemy booby trap, the Soldier shouted for everyone to take cover. Instantly assessing the danger to the men of his squad, SSG Murray unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own safety, threw himself on the grenade absorbing the full and fatal impact of the explosion. By his gallant action and self sacrifice, he prevented the death or injury of the other members of his squad. SSG Murray extraodinary courage and gallantry, at the cost of his own life above and beyond the call of duty, are in keeping with the highest tradtions of the military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the U.S. Army.
