The 511th Military Police Company shifts focus from their Law Enforcement mission to improve Company readiness through conducting ranges, NVG live fire, and land navigation. On behalf of LTC LeBlanc and CSM Smith, we would like to thank the Centurion Soldiers for their outstanding performance during their FTX. The Centurions established a deployed PMO while simultaneously maintaining law enforcement for the Fort Drum community with MPI, TMCI, Desk, and MWD. Soldiers conducted law enforcement lanes that culminated in an active killer scenario with sim rounds that tested the Soldiers and built upon the live fire shoot house training conducted in May. Additionally, the Centurions conducted Skill Level 1 tasks that need to be maintained. Both 227th MP DET and 8th MWD DET trained hard, learned from each other, and created TTPs that will better assist them while working the law enforcement mission on Fort Drum. We couldn't be more proud of the work our Centurion Soldiers put in every day!

THE ATOMIC AGE - Chapter 1: A New Way of War

The atomic bomb did more than end WWII. It ushered in a new way of thinking about military force and state power. In 1949, when the Soviet Union successfully tested its own nuclear weapons, this new devastating capability split the world between two powers, the US and the USSR, with the ability to wipe out large swaths of civilizations.

Today we start a week-long series of threads regarding the remaking of the U.S. Army during this time, primarily focusing on the period between 1956 and 1961.

This was a wild time for the Army, one in which the service faced real questions about its relevance and mission. The Soviet Union had the bomb. We had the bomb. The dark cloud of a possible apocalyptic war hovered constantly over the world. In November, 1955, General Lyman Lemnitzer, at the time commander of Eighth Army-Korea, and later Army Chief of Staff, told the force: “Today it seems to me the very survival of the Army, as we presently conceive it, is at stake.”

Two successive Army Chief of Staff's, Matthew Ridgway and then Maxwell Taylor, WW2 commanders of 82nd Airborne Division and 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), tried and mostly failed to remodel the Army into a force relevant for atomic war.

This was also the dawn of modern Army marketing and the birth of Army Public Affairs.

Team Mountain Guardian continues to excel! Gunslingers in the 23D MP Company were out conducting crew-level live fire and team-level certifications, becoming more mobile, cohesive, and lethal teams. BG Funck and CSM Terenas came to visit this training, letting these Mountain Guardians know they continue to set the standard across Fort Drum!

511TH MP Company maintainers, led by SFC Harris and SGT Saunders, conducted submerged vehicle recovery and field maintenance training. This training allows our maintainers to conduct vehicle recovery and repair operations in all manner of conditions, allowing us to stay in the fight wherever it is! SPC Rivera and PFC Martin received battalion coins for their willingness to learn and take on new challenges.

The Mountain Guardian Battalion also said their farewells to CPT Kocher and CPT Cohen, who served as the Battalion S2 and Battalion Law and Order Officer! On behalf of LTC LeBlanc and CSM Smith, we would like to thank them for their dedication to the Soldiers of the 91ST and wish them well on their journeys!

The Workhorse Team of Teams has been hard at work these past few weeks. 1LT Forsyth instructed a class on Risk Management and how it can be used in everyday life rather than only Army specific tasks. SSG Wardrick conducted a sensing session with HHD on the difficult questions regarding race and diversity in society and in the Army. SPC Duncan was presented the 16th Military Police Brigade Coin of Excellence for his outstanding performance during the Brigade Soldier of the Year competition. WO1 Hull, SPC Sicairos, SPC Nieves, SPC Martinez, PFC Oble, and SPC Holman were presented Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment Coins of Excellence for their hard work and efforts put into the recent COVID-19 response and deployment to DC. Finally the Workhorse and Mountain Guardian family bid farewell to CPT Free as he PCS's to study at Harvard University.

SFC Prado was recognized by LTC LeBlanc and CSM Smith as a lifetime Mountain Guardian for his hard work with the 91st Military Police Battalion from 2017 to 2018. His dedication to Soldiers laid the groundwork for what continues to make our Battalion S1 team the best in the Army!

Today the Mountain Guardian family celebrated America's Birthday a little early with Red, White, and Blue PT!

Our Soldiers divided into teams for four events: A five mile run, a three mile run, a circuit workout, and a cornhole tournament. A patriotic costume contest was also held at the conclusion of the PT session. Winners from each event were recognized by LTC LeBlanc and CSM Smith, and awarded a battalion coin!

511TH MP Company was awarded the Battalion Tomahawk for placing first in the cornhole tournament!

CSM Smith was given a memento from the Mountain Guardian Soldiers in recognition of his last two and a half years as our Battalion Command Sergeant Major. Our family wishes CSM Smith and his family all the best as they prepare to embark on their next adventure!

The Mountain Guardian family would like to show our congratulations to the Berserker Soldiers of the 511TH MP Company for graduating the Mountain Guardian Academy! These Military Policemen earned the iconic MP Brassard and are now certified to conduct law enforcement operations on Fort Drum. This extensive training included less-than-lethal weapons familiarization, New York State law review, and scenario-based training. LTC LeBlanc, CSM Smith, and Chief Julian could not be more proud of our law enforcement professionals!

This academy allows Mountain Guardian Soldiers to have a deeper understanding of use of force procedures and enables them to better serve Fort Drum Soldiers, Civilians, and the community.

A special thanks to CPT Cohen, SFC Lambert, SSG Armas, and the DES Team for their excellent instruction and planning! Honor Above All! Mountain Guardians!

On behalf of LTC LeBlanc and CSM Smith, we would like to congratulate 227TH Military Police Detachment and 8TH Military Working Dog Detachment on continuing to conduct realistic training. Our Centurion Soldiers qualified on the M320, conducted land navigation training, and physical training in bite suits. 8th Military Working Dog Detachment continues to build strong working relationships with external agencies this past week with EOD explosives safety training and were able to operate a robot and do physical exercises in a bomb suit. 8th Military Working Dog Detachment also put their MWDs to the test with water aggression to close out the week.

SGT Perkins of the 563D Military Police Company was also recognized for handling a stressful and dangerous situation with restraint and efficiency while conducting law enforcement operations on Fort Drum. His respect for fellow Soldiers and self-control serves as the example for how all law enforcement professionals should conduct themselves while serving in the line of duty.

Our Mountain Guardian family couldn’t be more proud of how our Soldiers conduct themselves every day!

On behalf of LTC LeBlanc and CSM Smith, we would like to recognize the outstanding efforts by the Soldiers of both the 511TH Military Police Company and the 23D Military Police Company. Our Beserker and Gunslinger Soldiers recently completed a range density, increasing their weapons readiness and lethality! Good News Story: 16 Months ago, Rainbow Baez, the family dog of SFC Baez got lost on FT Drum, NY. We all now how important a family pet can be and how hard this was on the Baez family, especially the children. Today I received a call from SFC Baez, who asked me to thank SFC Severino and the entire Berserker Company who are currently working the road for finding and caring for Rainbow. Rainbow survived being alone here and two brutal North Country winters alone. They are receiving vet care and then will be reunited with the Baez family, now stationed in Germany. Never underestimate the impact something that seems small may have on a family, great job Guardians! Honor Above All! CSM Smith
