Do you live to exercise? Unless you're an elite athlete, you probably answered no to that question. Most people, in fact, would say they exercise to improve their quality of life. And that's the focus of functional fitness. Functional fitness exercises are designed to train and develop your muscles to make it easier and safer to perform everyday activities, such as carrying groceries or playing a game of basketball with your kids. What is functional fitness training? Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports. While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasize core stability. For example, a squat is a functional exercise because it trains the muscles used when you rise up and down from a chair or pick up low objects. By training your muscles to work the way they do in everyday tasks, you prepare your body to perform well in a variety of common situations. Functional fitness exercises can be done at home or at the gym. Gyms may offer functional fitness classes or incorporate functional fitness into boot camps or other types of classes. Exercise tools, such as fitness balls, kettle bells and weights, are often used in functional fitness workouts. What are the benefits of functional fitness training? Functional exercises tend to be multijoint, multimuscle exercises. Instead of only moving the elbows, for example, a functional exercise might involve the elbows, shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles. This type of training, properly applied, can make everyday activities easier, reduce your risk of injury and improve your quality of life. Functional exercise training may be especially beneficial as part of a comprehensive program for older adults to improve balance, agility and muscle strength, and reduce the risk of falls. The functional fitness payoff As you add more functional exercises to your workout, you should see improvements in your ability to perform your everyday activities and, thus, in your quality of life. That's quite a return on your exercise investment.

Thank you to everyone who participated and supported the event! All competitors competed in the Bench, Squat and Dead Lift Competitions. Medals 1st-3rd were handed out to all the winners. Looking forward to having another competition in the early spring πŸ˜€

It is that time of year again when snow starts to fly (it was a good 2 weeks of summer πŸ™ƒ). The gyms are going to start to get pretty crowded during PT. Unfortunately we do not take reservations on our page. However, you can come into the gym or give us a call at (315) 772-3377 between 0530-1330 to reserve areas (e.g. lanes, mats, boxing area etc.) of the gym to better accommodate your PT needs. Congratulations on being the 1st Enlisted Soldier in the Army to max out the new ACFT. We love seeing the soldiers who train here at Atkins achieve great things and be recognized for their hard work and passion. This is what our gym is all about. Fit for duty. Fit for life. In the spirit of giving, not only will we having the Atkins Powerlifting Contest, Atkins will also be hosting the BOSS Invades Atkins Functional Fitness Challenge on November 7th. Challenge signup starts at 0900 and competition starts at 1000. Better start preparing to have your muscles tested and see if you can keep your breath. So save the date, and see if y'all can cut it and come out on top in this competition! Signup at the front counter or the day of the competition. Weigh in starts at 0700 and the competition starts at 0900. Must be a DOD card holder and 18 years old and up.

Another big Atkins Shoutout to Heather Famiano! She recently competed and placed 5th overall in the women's scaled division at the State Competition Crossfit Games. Heather is a military spouse and former Fort Drum FMWR employee. She trained daily at Atkins before PCSing to Alaska.

I think it is fitting to honor SSG Travis Atkins tomorrow, the day the POTUS will posthumously award him the Congressional Medal of Honor, with a Hero workout. CrossFit Hero WOD library did not have one listed for him, so I came up with this 5 round smoker: Hero WOD Atkins 5 Rounds for time: 10 Thrusters #115/95 50 box step ups with 45lb barbell 10 devil presses w/#45 dumbells 50 DUs / 100SU Scale weight as needed
