Most people, in fact, would say they exercise to improve their quality of life. And that's the focus of functional fitness. Functional fitness exercises are designed to train and develop your muscles to make it easier and safer to perform everyday activities, such as carrying groceries or playing a game of basketball with your kids. What is functional fitness training? Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports. While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasize core stability. For example, a squat is a functional exercise because it trains the muscles used when you rise up and down from a chair or pick up low objects. By training your muscles to work the way they do in everyday tasks, you prepare your body to perform well in a variety of common situations. Functional fitness exercises can be done at home or at the gym. Gyms may offer functional fitness classes or incorporate functional fitness into boot camps or other types of classes. Exercise tools, such as fitness balls, kettle bells and weights, are often used in functional fitness workouts. What are the benefits of functional fitness training? Functional exercises tend to be multijoint, multimuscle exercises. Instead of only moving the elbows, for example, a functional exercise might involve the elbows, shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles. This type of training, properly applied, can make everyday activities easier, reduce your risk of injury and improve your quality of life. Functional exercise training may be especially beneficial as part of a comprehensive program for older adults to improve balance, agility and muscle strength, and reduce the risk of falls. The functional fitness payoff As you add more functional exercises to your workout, you should see improvements in your ability to perform your everyday activities and, thus, in your quality of life. That's quite a return on your exercise investment.

In the spirit of spooky season we have created a workout challenge for our fitness fanatics! 🎃

🧟‍♀️Starting Monday 26 OCT we will post a themed Workout of the Day (WOD) every morning at 0600 until the day after Halloween. 🧛‍♂️

These workouts can be completed at home or at the gym. No equipment necessary, but feel free to use weights if you prefer. Of course, we encourage everyone to adjust the workouts to their ability! 💀

UPDATE: EFFECTIVE TUES. 13 OCT 2020

Gym access will be made available to ALL ID cardholders after 0800 on weekdays and all day on Saturdays! Ages 17+ only. During the week we will close from 1000-1100 and 1400-1500 for sanitizing.

🥳PT Uniform will no longer be required, except during Active Duty hours from 0600-0800 Monday-Friday for PT! 🎉

🏋️Maximum facility capacity: 60 people.
All areas of the gym will remain available on a first come, first served basis. Reservations will NOT be available.

💧Showers and water fountains will remain closed. The water bottle refill fountain will be available!

😷Face masks are still REQUIRED to enter the building and must be worn at ALL times when transitioning to other equipment or areas of the gym. Face masks do NOT have to be worn during workouts!

This Saturday will we be open from 0900-1500 while Magrath Sports Complex is still closed.

Because we love competitions, Atkins will be having another on April 25th! The events will be benching, squatting and dead lifting. Each participant will get 3 tries per event and is based on lifting weight to body weight percentage. This will be a RAW event, which means no lifting straps or bench shirts. Participants are able to use wrist wraps, knee wraps and weight belts if the choose to. This is open to all Military, spouses and valid DoD card holders 18 and older.

Thank you to everyone who participated and supported the event! All competitors competed in the Bench, Squat and Dead Lift Competitions. Medals 1st-3rd were handed out to all the winners. Looking forward to having another competition in the early spring 😀

It is that time of year again when snow starts to fly (it was a good 2 weeks of summer 🙃). The gyms are going to start to get pretty crowded during PT. Unfortunately we do not take reservations on our page. However, you can come into the gym or give us a call at (315) 772-3377 between 0530-1330 to reserve areas (e.g. lanes, mats, boxing area etc.) of the gym to better accommodate your PT needs. In the spirit of giving, not only will we having the Atkins Powerlifting Contest, Atkins will also be hosting the BOSS Invades Atkins Functional Fitness Challenge on November 7th. I think it is fitting to honor SSG Travis Atkins tomorrow, the day the POTUS will posthumously award him the Congressional Medal of Honor, with a Hero workout.
