If you have worked with our team you likely remember learning about Deliberate Breathing. There are many ways to practice deliberate breathing and it often goes hand in hand with the practice of mindfulness.

We wanted to share a podcast episode from Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (October 2020) where WRAIR Minds' podcast host Capt. Tom Nassif guides listeners through an "inner resource" exercise, which aids in decision-making and emotional control during stressful times.

Hey Fort Gordon, let's 'Hunting the Good Stuff'!

As many of you may know 'Hunting the Good Stuff' counteracts the negativity bias to create positive emotion, and to notice and analyze what is good. Think of three good events or things that happened in your day and why they were good.

When you 'Hunt the Good Stuff' it leads to better health, better sleep, feeling calm, better relationships, and greater life satisfaction. Wouldn't it be nice to gain some of those benefits heading into this holiday season? How can you implement this practice with you family and friends?

Recovery can also be anything that energizes you. Consider your hobbies or the people who give you energy. More often than not, when we get busy, these are the first things that take a hit. We don't dedicate as much time to them as we would like. Be deliberate in carving out time to engage in these activities or spend time with those people, they can refuel your soul to help you to continue to be effective in those big tasks in your life.

How are you recovering? Sleep is the most commonly talked about form of recovery but it's not the only one. Exercise can be a form of recovery as well. When we are cognitively and emotionally taxed, exerting physical energy through exercise can help us recover that mental energy.

Every now and then, a tough conversation is necessary.

Approaching the conversation with an Assertive Communication style can help make it more effective for both parties. When we communicate assertively, we use confidence, maintain control and our message is clear. This allows both parties to be heard and a solution to be reached.

You may not get everything you want but you can find a win-win for both sides and maintain the relationship!

The way we respond to news shared to us by those we care about, matters. Dr. Shelly Gable's research shows that there is only one response style that enhances the well-being of both parties and strengthens the relationship. That is Active Constructive Responding.

Are you showing authentic interest and elaborating on the experience of the person that shares news with you? If you said no and notice that you respond in the other styles shown and you care about enhancing the relationship you have with that person...then it may be worth reflecting on how you can be actively constructively respond.
