*** Attention Rugged Nation ***

December 16-18, 2025 we will be conducting Preservation of Life Training with guest speaker Mr. David Wood Bartley. Soldiers are requested to take the Pre-Training survey NLT December 5, 2025.

Rugged Families are encouraged to join the Mr. Bartley for a family-focused educational seminar 5:30-7:30 on December 16th at Rugged Chapel. Mr. Bartley is a dynamic speaker, trainer, and story teller, and will be offering insights into the complexities of mental illness, aiming to foster understanding and hope. He will address myths surrounding mental health, replacing misinformation with truth and empathy. The seminar will raise awareness and equip Rugged Families with practical tools for supporting mental well-being in themselves and others.

Mr. Bartley will also we available for one-on-one counseling sessions with Solders as needed. See flyers for more information.

Meet our youngest Rugged Wish sponsor, Cassie.

Last year, Cassie (7 y/o) began baking cookies to leave at our Staff Duty desks for donations. Her goal was to raise enough money to fully sponsor the BDE's largest Rugged Wish family (6 children).

Last year not only did Cassie achieve her goal, but she raised enough money to fully sponsor 24 children across the BDE... one cookie at a time.

This year, Cassie (now 8 y/o) once again set out to support our largest Rugged Wish Family. To date, she has baked 2,832 cookies since September 25th.

This will be her final seek baking cookies; please stop by your nearest 36th EN BDE Staff Duty desk to grab a snack and support our smallest sponsor in her goal to help other kiddos this holiday season 🎄🎁🎄

Rugged Nation! We’re back!

This year’s Rugged Wish Program is in full swing! We are supporting 166 children from 63 families at Ft. Hood, Ft. Leonard Wood, & Ft. Riley, who have been identified by their command teams as struggling with significant financial hardship. We will provide these families the necessities they need most - winter coats, clothing, shoes, diapers, etc.

We are looking for donations or wrapping supplies for our Rugged Wish gifts.

There is a QR code for each Rugged Wish location (Fts. Hood, Leonard Wood, & Riley). Please be sure to select the site you would like to support.

** Ft. Riley is in most need of supplies, as they did not have any supplies remaining after last year’s wrapping event **

Rugged History

The 36th Engineer Brigade was originally constituted on 1 October 1933 as the 36th Engineer Regiment and activated on 1 June 1941 as Plattsburg Barracks, New York. Since then, the unit has served with great distinction during almost every major conflict, including World War II, the Korean War, the Gulf War, and most recently, Operation Iraqi Freedom.

During World War II, the 36th Engineer Regiment consisted of nine combat engineer companies trained for amphibious assault and support operations. The regiment’s proud history as one of the first engineer units to fight using amphibious tactics is mirrored in the unit’s distinctive insignia, a seahorse on a red and white shield, proclaiming the prowess demonstrated during its five amphibious assault landings at Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Naples Foggia, Anzio, and Southern France. On 15 February 1945, the unit was redesignated as the 36th Engineer Combat Group, and following World War II, is reorganized at Fort Lewis, Washington.

During the Korean War, the 36th Engineer Combat Group consisted of four engineer battalions and four additional engineer companies, earning two Meritorious Unit Citations and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. The unit inactivated on 30 May 1972 and reactivated on 1 July 1973 as the 36th Engineer Group (Construction) at Fort Benning, Georgia. During the 1991 Gulf War, the 36th Engineer Group (Construction) fought in support of the 24th Infantry Divisions rapid attack to the Euphrates.

The unit also deployed in support of peace enforcement missions during Operation Continued Hope on Somalia and Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti.
