The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division

The votes are in, counted, and congratulations are in order for the NEXT Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division President-elect Designate ...

Todd Baker of Fort Lauderdale!

Congrats, Todd!

Todd narrowly edged out fellow YLD board member Stephanie Cagnet Myron by a few votes to earn the nomination and be the YLD's next-in-line leader. Todd's tenure will begin in June 2021 and last until June 2022. He will serve as President-elect under under Adam J Tw W.

So who is Todd Baker?

Well, he's a former assistant state attorney in Broward County who now works for Steinger, Greene & Feiner Injury Lawyers. After clerking at a prestigious personal injury firm, he joined the 17th Circuit State Attorney’s Office to harness his trial skills and learn how to litigate. He was responsible for thousands of cases and argued hundreds of motions and non-jury trials before almost every criminal judge in the 17th Circuit for Broward County with almost 50 jury trials under his belt.

Todd earned his undergrad at the University of Michigan and his J.D. from UF Levin College of Law. He is also a past president of the Broward County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section who remains heavily involved in young lawyer activities in his community.

Todd is currently chair of CLE and Sponsorship Committee and co-chair of the Local Bar Affiliates Committee. In fact, the newly launched "Find An Affiliate" website -- which allows YLS and YLD affiliates around the state to upload information about events for the rest of the state to follow on one central page -- was his brainchild. (Check it out here: https://flayldaffiliates.com/)

Once again, congrats and best of luck to Todd -- and we can't wait to work with him! #FlaYLD

Commentary: “Criminal defense lawyers have long been demonized for representing unpopular clients. But two high-profile sexual assault prosecutions have exacerbated the public’s disdain, to the extent that a widespread misapprehension has emerged—namely, that criminal defense lawyers, in defending those the public has deemed indefensible, somehow become complicit in their clients’ alleged transgressions, or somehow take on whatever moral failings their clients may have.”

"Carmen Brown can vote again.

The 64-year-old Miami woman, with four felonies on her record from decades ago, was the first person called up in a special court hearing Friday aimed at waiving court fees and restoring her right to vote under Florida’s Amendment 4.

As a crowded courtroom erupted into applause, Brown hugged Miami-Dade’s top prosecutor and public defender. Then, she embraced a special guest, singer John Legend, a high-profile advocate of criminal justice reform who showed up Friday to support the restoration of voting rights."

"Police concluded that the substance was cocaine and charged Gregg with a felony. Last week, after spending nearly two months in jail, the 29-year-old pleaded guilty to cocaine possession with the intent to distribute, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. But on [last] Thursday, just two days after learning his fate, Gregg was back in court, this time to withdraw his guilty plea. The lab tests had come back, and they showed that the suspicious-looking white substance was powdered milk, the Oklahoman reported. According to the paper, Gregg told the judge that he got the milk from a food pantry. He said that he entered a guilty plea only so that he could stop languishing in Oklahoma County Jail, which has been plagued with issues including overcrowding, chronic mold and an unusually high suicide rate for decades."

Hi, everyone. I’m a fact-checker for an author who is writing a book that takes place on death row in Florida. I’m trying to find out how much privacy a death row inmate would have with a family visitor—that is, where attorney–client privilege is not involved. Can you help ?
