Somerville, Massachusetts, has now gone more than three years without a traffic fatality. Their success wasn't the result of one big project; it came from consistently implementing proven, evidence-based safety improvements over time.

Their strategy included:
🔴Adding striped crosswalks
🟠Shortening crosswalks by adding curb extensions
🟡Expanding the bike lane network
🟢Fixing and adding missing sidewalks
🔵Adding speed humps and narrowing driving lanes
⚪Adding new bus stops and bus-only lanes
⚫Lowering speed limits across the City

The good news? New Jersey communities can do this too. Hoboken has gone more than nine years without a traffic fatality by using the same Vision Zero and Complete Streets strategies, proving life-saving improvements work in our state.

Every municipality and county in New Jersey has the opportunity to make streets safer by adopting Complete & Green Streets policies, implementing traffic calming, improving crosswalk visibility, and developing Local Safety Action Plans as part of their Master Plans that prioritize people over vehicle speed.

Safe streets don't happen by accident. They happen by design.
