Fort Stewart Warriors Walk

"To better keep the memories alive at our living memorial, we have decided to replace the Eastern Redbud trees at Warriors Walk with a hardier and longer-lived Crape Myrtle. We understand this is an emotional decision. The Eastern Redbud has long become the symbol of honoring our fallen here at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield. Due to the size of the memorial and other issues related to the soil and drainage, we have no choice but to change trees. The Crape Myrtle is a better suited tree for our living memorial thanks to its long life and sturdy constitution. Switching to Crape Myrtles will ensure Warriors Walk will remain a living memorial for generations to come to and honor our Soldiers who laid their lives down on the altar of freedom. All 468 primary next-of-kin were contacted via a letter from Maj. Gen. Murray on the upcoming change. We understand our Gold Star Families have questions about the change, and we want to reassure them and the public that this change, while emotional, is for the best at Warriors Walk."
