Do you wonder what a Children's Advocacy Center is? A children’s advocacy center (CAC) is the ONE non-profit to serve as the first stop for children victimized by sexual abuse or severe physical abuse or who have witnessed a violent crime. CACs provide a safe, child-friendly environment where law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, medical, and mental health professionals can share information and develop effective, coordinated strategies sensitive to the needs of each unique case and child. It is the goal of all local centers to reduce trauma to child abuse victims and their families.

#WhattoReadWednesday Children sometimes struggle just like adults do. One way to help kids get through tough times is to introduce calming exercises like meditation. This book, A Handful of Quiet by Thich Nhat Hanh, introduces pebble meditation as a playful and fun activity that parents and educators can do with their children to introduce them to meditation. It is designed to involve children in a hands-on and creative way that touches on their interconnection with nature.

For #WhatToReadWednesday, check out Homecoming: Reclaiming and Championing Your Inner Child by John Bradshaw. From our PR/Marketing Coordinator, Molly Horn: "Bradshaw's book helped me recover from trauma I experienced as a child that was still affecting me as an adult. It also helped me understand my own child better, as well as become more comfortable in my role as a mother. I believe this book can be helpful for anyone who experienced trauma in childhood and who may still be carrying those wounds today."

Did you know Alliance For Children takes part in Animal Assisted Therapy?

“Children who have experienced abusive trauma are often afraid of being blamed or judged because they may feel like the abuse is their fault. This is a tremendous burden to bear, and an animal who has no hidden agenda, judgement and nothing but unconditional love, is a huge comfort for that child. Unfortunately, unconditional love is not always something that children we serve have experienced in life.”
--Diana Davis, Director of Clinical Services at Alliance For Children

Alliance For Children has the privilege of collaborating with volunteer dog handlers and their furry companions who are specially trained, certified and insured as therapy animals. Many of our clinical therapists have noticed successful outcomes in utilizing animals in therapy. When a child begins interacting with the animal, their defenses are immediately lessened, allowing them to feel more comfortable sharing their story and feelings during a counseling session.

The goal and mission of this group is remarkable, especially because this is the only non-profit organization in your county! My awareness of the issue of child abuse began with a film I just watch called #WhatHauntsUs. This film's focus is on sexual abuse within the school system. It exposes a predator that had the chance to abuse 50+ students. This type of abuse should also be brought to attention to help these children heal and recover. If you are interested in the documentary its available on SVOD:
