SCAM ALERT! Fraud artists are posing as police officers on the phone to steal your money. The Grapevine Police Department warns scammers are impersonating officers from their department, calling residents to demand up to $5,000 for nonexistent warrants. This may be happening in other Tarrant County cities as well. Read the ALERT below.

Criminals never tire from trying to scam you out of money, and they are at it again today in Grapevine. We have had several calls into dispatch - just in the last few hours - from people targeted by thieves. The caller is spoofing a Grapevine Police phone number, claiming to be one of our officers... and telling people they missed a court date. Now, this is not a new scam.

Here's how it works: criminals pose as law enforcement, convince someone they either have an outstanding warrant or were subpoenaed and missed a court date - and if they don't pay a fine immediately, they will be arrested. Victims are asked to give bank information or a credit card number, or directed to purchase gift cards then give the information to the caller. By the times victims realize what happened, the money is gone.

Grapevine Police will never call you and demand payment over the phone. We do at times call to inform people they have a warrant, but we never ask for payment. If you get a call and want to verify the information - call us directly and ask. Odds are -- if you have to call us to check -- it's probably not true.

We appreciate everyone who called to let us know this is happening today - and are grateful that so far, we have no reports of anyone giving the scammer money. Please help us spread the word and protect our community from becoming a victim.

Why Armando died in vain while this person calmed down watching television?! Did Tarrant county drop the ball? Not care quite enough? It's citizens do...and we would like the answers.
