**Fowler Community Update***
TGIF! Hope you’re surviving (or at least sweating stylishly) in this classic Kansas heatwave. Just when I thought things were slowing down, Fowler proves me wrong again—there’s always something happening! Here are a few reminders and updates about what’s going on around town. I’m putting all the info in one post to spare your news feed from chaos and to make sure nothing gets missed.
1. School is back in session, so please keep an eye out for our young scholars walking to and from school (and possibly plotting their next recess adventure). Remember, the speed limit is 20 mph—let’s keep everyone safe, especially the future leaders and dodgeball champions of Fowler!
2. A friendly (but slightly hissy) reminder to stay alert while you’re out enjoying your yard or strolling the streets. This week, a rattlesnake den was found inside the city limits—don’t worry, those snakes have been taken care of, but please remain diligent because the babies are on the move! We’ve had reports of three or more baby rattlesnakes spotted in yards on the west side of town, and two grown rattlers sent packing this week alone. Stay safe, and maybe watch your step—those snakes aren’t just looking for shade, they want to meet our famous Fowler hospitality, too.
3. The Water Improvement Project is officially underway! Crews are starting on the east side of town and will gradually make their way south and across each street from Park St. We’ll do our best to give you a heads-up if there’s a major water shut-off in your area. Occasional 15-30 minute water interruptions might happen, but don’t worry—no one will be without water for long. And you won’t need to boil your water unless we make a public announcement (no surprise science experiments, promise). We’ll communicate as much as possible, but if we miss something, blame it on city hall’s caffeine supply running low. The construction company will also keep us updated if anything is going to impact the public.
4. Code Enforcement update: Letters are going out as our Code Enforcement Officer makes her rounds. Just a reminder—she doesn’t live in Fowler, and she doesn’t know who lives where, so no one’s being singled out. She’s just on the lookout for things that aren’t up to code. If you get a letter and have questions, give the office a call! With snail mail, sometimes you’ll fix things before the letter even arrives (mail speed: somewhere between a tortoise and a sloth). We do follow up and check several times before letters are sent. If you call to let us know your plan, we’ll note it and share the info with the officer—steady progress helps with notices, court costs, and fines. To help with cleanup, we’ll have a roll-off dumpster available soon, with dates to be announced. Get ready for some spring cleaning, even if it’s not quite spring!
5. The compost pit is open Fridays and Saturdays, but if you’re feeling inspired to garden outside those hours, call the office and we’ll try to help. Please don’t leave your tree limbs or clippings outside the gate when it’s closed—the compost elves are off duty then! Hours are posted, and we’re always here if you need help. The pit is for tree limbs and grass clippings only, and we’re inspected by the state (so help us keep our gold star rating). Please put your tree limbs down in the pit—not just at the edge—unless it’s muddy (then, close to the road is fine). And whatever you do, no plastic bags with your clippings or leaves!
6. We’ve gone pet-friendly! The City has installed trash cans with doggy bag dispensers at the Mini Park on Main St, the baseball fields, the park, and the RV park. Please use them and help keep our parks clean (your dog will thank you, and so will your neighbors). If you know your dog has been visiting the neighbor’s yard, be a good sport and clean up after them—think of it as building community, one scoop at a time!
7. Don’t forget—your pets need yearly vaccinations and city tags, just like your golf carts and ATVs. All of these are due in January each year. For furry friends, bring proof of vaccinations and $2 per pet for their tags. For golf carts and ATVs, bring your proof of insurance and $35 per vehicle. 8. A friendly request from City Council: Please don’t ride scooters or bikes on the Main Street sidewalks in front of businesses from 7am to 7pm, Monday through Friday. We’ve had some close calls with folks walking out of businesses and nearly getting taken out by speedy cyclists or scooter riders. Let’s keep everyone in one piece—both riders and pedestrians!
