People can heal from an addiction—especially when they get the support they need to relieve withdrawal symptoms, navigate triggers, and make positive changes. This video explores why many people find it difficult to control or stop drug use and how research conducted and supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) can help people find prevention and treatment strategies that work for them.

Like other chronic diseases, people with opioid use disorder experience periods of remission and recurrence. Addiction is a disease – not a moral failing – and treatment should include evidence-based care and support, not judgment.

Our LGBTQIA+ community members are disproportionately affected by the opioid epidemic, just like they disproportionately face public stigma, or society’s negative attitudes towards a group of people.

Starting at a young age, people who identify as LGBTQIA+ live with everyday discrimination, marginalization, and victimization based on their sexual and gender minority statuses. Public stigma can become internalized, leading to identity concealment, self-hate, feelings of worthlessness, and fear of rejection – and that’s without the additional public stigma that affects those living with opioid use disorder (OUD).

As Kentuckians, we’re stronger than stigma – and that means we’re stronger than the public stigma and shame that have long been inflicted on our neighbors in the LGBTQIA+ community, including those with OUD. We’re replacing stigma with empathy. We’re replacing shame with compassion. We’re coming together to show one another we care.

KORE partners – you’re doing incredibly innovative work. Here's an opportunity for national recognition and impact!

SAMHSA is announcing its first-ever behavioral health Recovery Innovation Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to identify innovations developed by peer-run or community-based organizations.

As part of this challenge, participants are encouraged to share details about the practices they are using to advance recovery and demonstrate how these practices have: 1) expanded upon SAMHSA’s definition of recovery, or 2) helped them overcome challenges in incorporating recovery into their behavioral health services or systems.

The deadline for submission is July 15, 2022 and finalists will be announced on August 6. Finalists must give presentations to a panel of judges from September 2-9, 2022; awards will be announced in October 2022. The purse prize is up to $400,000. The competition will offer up to 10 awards.

Welcome to the KORE Community

The Kentucky Opioid Response Effort (KORE) seeks to establish a comprehensive response to Kentucky's opioid crisis by expanding access to opioid prevention, treatment and recovery support services. Housed in the Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, KORE is funded entirely by federal grants (1H79TI080264 and 1H79TI081704) from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
