Dear forest friend,
Can you believe this caterpillar will
become the largest butterfly In North America? The wing spread can be as wide as 6 inches, which may not sound like much but is impressive when you see it.
The Hoptrees (Ptelea trifoliata) at Fantasy Forest have been host to several Giant caterpillars this year. Look closely: they are masters of disguise.
I've found most on the small tree growing amidst the mountain mint on the Logan Street side.
They look like a blob of bird p**p.

Find us at the Frankfort farmers market this Saturday giving away plants! 🪴

The largest Red Hickory tree in the United States was recently discovered in Kentucky.
It is growing in the Daniel Boone National Forest and could be logged soon.
Kentucky Heartwood is working hard to save the tree. The small non-profit has been protecting and defending Kentucky national forests for decades.

Right now they need all the help they can get to save this special hickory and the other old- growth trees growing with it.

Looking behind Fantasy Forest supporter Don you can see one of two dog waste stations recently installed by Parks & Recreation staff.

South Frankfort neighbors are discovering the pleasures of walking a dog in Fantasy Forest and our hard working volunteers are discovering p**p on their shoes. Yecch!
