What a great article!

On a recent stormy morning, Franklin Fire Department Capt. Chuck served as a guide for state Rep. Jeffrey Roy, Town Administrator Jamie Hellen and Town Councilor Melanie Hamblen as they worked their way through flames and smoke in the Milford Fire Department’s live burn building behind its station on Birch Street in Milford, Massachusetts.

Water Plant Update:

Our primary water treatment plant that takes care of the water we pump from the ground (wells 1 and 2, which are the oldest and largest wells in Franklin) is still down. Besides disinfection and pH modifications, this plant removes high levels of Iron and Manganese from the ground water. It is a complex system that uses Ozone and Micro-filters and provides exceptionally high quality water. This plant was constructed 15 years ago. These wells and treatment plant provide up to 30% of the Town's Drinking water. If you did not know, Franklin gets all of its drinking water from the ground, not from rivers, ponds or steams. We have 12 wells at various locations throughout town. Also, we are the largest ground water producer in the Commonwealth.

The fire on Saturday was caused by a heater inside one of the mixing tanks that was empty at the time. This tank is only used when we are doing maintenance ( i.e when cleaning the filters approximately every two weeks). We are trying to figure out why this heater turned on when the plant was not it maintenance mode. We have found some issues with the control panel, indications might be from a lighting strike, but we can not confirm at this time.

As bad as this is, it could have been much worse. Alarms went off letting us (Franklin DPW) know that something was wrong. Our staff responded quickly and began disengaging the systems. As the situation escalated, the Franklin Fire Department also responded quickly. Without these timely actions, this fire could have been a lot worse with additional hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages.

So please follow the water ban!

Our primary concern is that we have plenty of water for potable consumption and fire protection.

Our biggest use of water this time of year is "outdoor watering". We did have to stop and notify some residents today who were watering their laws because they did not know about the water ban. We all need to get the word out for the good of the community, the last thing I want to do is issue tickets.

Thank you for you support and have a great Public Works Day!
