Gender Sexuality Alliance

Gender Sexuality Alliance Welcome! This is the Tri-County RVTHS GSA (formerly known as Diversity) page. We welcome all members of any community to join us.

06/05/2017

Hi everyone. It is officially my last day of being the GSA President as it is also my last day as a Tri-county student.

Over the past four years, I’ve seen this club grow tremendously. Back when I was a freshman, there were fewer people who came to meetings, but those few who did gave me inspiration for the future. The three years after that were amazing as well, with seeing more people become involved with our tight knit community and watching people find a place where they could be themselves. I have been proud to call myself your president for the past three years, and I know that you will all do incredible things with your future.

Before I wrap up this mini final speech, I would like to thank Mrs. J for being the club advisor for the past four years and a huge help to all club members, Mrs. Remmes for joining as club advisor and supporting us as her students as well as her club members, and my secretary Hollyann Edwards who was the person who took me to my first Diversity Club (our old name) meeting; without them, our GSA family would not be the same. Good luck everyone, though I’m not worried. You are all extraordinary!

~Your 2014-2017 president, Kate Pensak

P.S. Don’t worry though, I will come back to visit for meetings!

Today was our last meeting with the class of 2017. GSA wishes you all luck on your next adventure!

Hey everyone! Prom is tonight! Even though the lack of diversity in prom monarchy choices wasn't pleasant, hopefully everyone who goes will have a great time. Be responsible seniors/juniors/invitees! ~Kate

Hey yall! Hopefully everyone is enjoying their vacation as much as I am.

Luckily, this horrible excuse for a year is coming to a close, and even though it was plagued with sadness and tension, we can still appreciate what was done for LGBTQ+ people in our society.

Early this year, the United States Department of Justice sued North Carolina over their bill that would discriminate people based on their preference of bathrooms. If you may recall, this caused a lot of people to disassociate with NC, especially in the field of college sports.

President Obama announced on May 31 that June 2016 was LGBT Pride Month, and called upon us to "eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American People".

President Obama also did a lot to make sure that his laws and bills protecting LGBTQ+ people were not squandered by Congress.

We also saw many new places where LGBTQ+ people were filling in the gap and are being more represented.

There's plenty more that happened, but this list is long enough. I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday, and here's to 2017!

-Eric

I know that there are a lot of mixed emotions about the election right now especially within minority groups like this GSA. I just wanted to remind everyone that we all care about you, no matter who you are or how you present yourself. ~Kate

It’s once again that time of year! Happy National Coming Out Day everyone! We are so proud of everyone who has come out of the closet (fully or only a little) and anyone who has not or cannot come out yet. Just remember, you are all awesome and we care about you. Have a great day! :D Cameron

Today is Coming out Day for 2016
Some things to remember...
You don't have to tell anyone anything.
Don't out someone, especially if it could cause harm.
Understand everyone's experience will be different, just because you bake a cake and write I'm gay on top of it doesn't automatically mean your parents will accept you even though they should because you are their child.
No matter what someone says you are the only person that defines you, is you.
And no matter the label, the identity, the you.. remember there is a community. It's very diverse, but at the heart of it we love you all.

Hey everyone! Just putting out a reminder that the first meeting of GSA is next Wednesday! As this is just a welcome back for our old members and a welcome to our new members, this would be a great chance for anyone who is considering joining to come see what club is all about!

I will not be able to attend due to scheduling errors, but you'll still hear from me. ~Kate

Hey everyone! I hope you're all having a good summer! Just a friendly reminder to stay hydrated and use things to protect your skin during these sweltering sunny days! :D Cameron

Has everyone heard the awesome news?! President Obama has sent guidelines to every school district in the United States which assert that transgender students have the right to use the bathroom they identify with. (Although this is not an "official" law in all states, the penalty for not following this could go as far as losing government funding.) Thank you Obama Administration for ensuring that us students have that right! :D Cameron

Hey everyone! I have a special request from Mrs. Martin! We have two days to study counter culture of the mid 1900s (we are currently in Vietnam for a more exact time frame) in History class and she wants to know if anyone has ideas for a brief segment within that on LGBTQ+ rights and culture. If anyone has any ideas for activities, short films, readings, ect., please bring them to next week's meeting. She was also wondering if we think that everyone would be comfertable with the topic (I'd expect because of how much violence against LGBTQ+ people occured in that time period). So just bring opinions and ideas to the meeting. Thanks! ~Kate

Just an FYI, we will not be having a meeting this week. BUT........

Ok, so hopefully she doesn't find this page, but as many of you know Mrs. Remmes is having a baby! I was thinking since next week will be the second to last meeting with seniors that we could throw a mini surprise baby shower! Gifts are not necessary, but I'm sure she would love a hand made card or two. Just remember to keep this on the down-low so it's a surprise! ~Kate

Hey GSA-ers. Since I know that many of you are creative, I wanted to let you know that they are still accepting sign-ups for art pieces and performances at the Coffee House & Arts Festival, which is being hosted at school by the N.H.S. on April 7th, in the Deans office on Thursday and Friday. ~Kate

03/28/2016

Hola everyone. There will possibly be a meeting (when I talked to Mrs. J this morning she hadn't decided yet) after school tomorrow to ensure that we're ready for our field trip! Don't forget to pick up a permission slip if you are planning on attending too (you could probably get it at this meeting or at lunch tomorrow). :D Cameron

GUYS I HAD A GREAT AND FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE!!! I went to 7-11 and I work in retail so I was talking to the clerk on duty. We started talking about cleaning and then got to the subject of one of the employees transitioning from male to female. What was amazing was that he allowed me to educate him on hormones and pronouns and was genuinely interested in trying to make his coworker comfortable and to not offend her in any way. I was super pleased and have a lot more faith in humanity.

Hey everyone. Sorry this is so late (I forgot to check my E-mail for a week again), but I wanted to remind you about the SADD poster contest! The posters are due by the 23rd (I have no idea if the morning of is still a possible time.) and should feature "artwork, poetry or song lyrics promoting acceptance and diversity." Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. So if you're creative and can make a poster in a day (Again, really sorry. Vacation is not a good time to try to remember an announcement.) then try entering! ~Kate
