Parents: Know the stats. Teens talking on a cell phone while driving can double the likelihood of a crash and slow down their reaction time. Remind them to drive safely through prom and graduation season.

Operation Ghost Rider.

The Transportation Improvement Association (TIA) and several law enforcement agencies are teaming up to remind motorists to avoid distractions while driving. Law enforcement officers from the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, and several local police departments will begin conducting Operation Ghost Rider on Wednesday, 5/19/21. The goal is to reduce distracted driving deaths and injuries.

Operation Ghost Rider uses unmarked spotter vehicles, which contain a law enforcement passenger. When the spotters observe a distracted driver, they radio a fully marked law enforcement unit to initiate a traffic stop.

According to TIA, preliminary numbers for 2020 indicated 51 persons were killed and 5,559 were injured in 14,326 motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver in the state of Michigan. During 2019, 70 persons were killed and 6,842 were injured in 18,096 crashes involving a distracted driver.

Put the phone or any other items away. Keep your hands on the wheel, your eyes on the road, and your focus on arriving to your destination safely.

Greetings TSA, Most Michigan Left turn arounds are one lane but enough room for 2 cars at the stop sign or light. I found out the hard way they are one lane as I was stopped after another I was to the left and he made a sharp left to go in the left lane of a 3 lane highway and clipped the front of my car. I was found at fault because he was at the stop sign first. Normally I understand "Ignorance of the law is no excuse" Except everyone I polled thought it was 2 lanes. I know now the reason why the expansion of width is for semi trucks and busses making the turn. I just witnessed another accident.. I believe the best solution is to paint one lane through the center and line out with white paint the outside, similar to the way some shoulders are painted. Just one tax payer's opinion. Thanks, Dave
