DED recently met with Ilham and Lotfi Suleman, owners of Yahya Halal Meat & Grocery , to learn more about their new business and how they’re getting established.

Located in Willowdale Shopping Center, Halal Supermarket opened about two months ago and offers a selection of Arabic, North African and other international food products. The Tunisian-owned business is currently operated by the owners, who hope to bring on additional help as the business grows.

The Sulemans shared that they’ve felt welcomed by the Willowdale community and are focused on building their customer base. Check them out at 5 Willowdale Drive.

Downtown Frederick has a new place for romance readers to find their next favorite story.

Amber Trinkle and Sara Belasco, owners of Periwinkle & Prose, recently celebrated the grand opening of their new independent romance bookstore at 106 N. Market Street, above Starbucks.

The owners hope to create more than a bookstore by offering a cozy, interactive space where readers can unplug, connect and build friendships. Book clubs, craft nights and book-themed events will give the community opportunities to gather and share their love of reading.

A new chapter for Frederick’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

The Maryland Deaf Community Center (MDCC) recently celebrated the grand opening of its new community space at 720 N. East Street in Frederick. The center was created to provide a dedicated, barrier-free place for education, communication, social connection, referrals, cultural programming and community resources.

MDCC’s new permanent home is especially significant because the organization was created to serve Deaf and Hard of Hearing people throughout Maryland. The center also offers opportunities for the broader community to learn ASL and build greater understanding and connection.

Exciting news for the cricket stadium project!

The Frederick City Council has approved rezoning that moves forward plans for a new cricket stadium in Frederick. Beyond creating a destination for the sport, the project represents an opportunity to bring visitors, support surrounding businesses and add to Frederick’s growing sports, tourism and entertainment economy.

As Frederick continues to attract new investment and diversify its economic base, projects like this can create new opportunities for businesses and strengthen the city as a destination.

The City of Frederick Department of Economic Development and Frederick County Office of Agriculture / Homegrown Frederick are proud to once again sponsor the Food Business Entrepreneurship Program at Frederick Community College's Hospitality, Culinary and Tourism Institute. Our program sponsorship allows this program to be offered FREE to participants!

This expert-led program delivers foundation-level concepts and knowledge in entrepreneurship and food service management. Topics include financial management, front and back of house operations, marketing and sales, regulatory requirements, and kitchen skills. You will develop the skills needed to plan for, start, and operate a food service business while preparing for the ServSafe Food Manager exam and the Entrepreneurship and Small Business Certification.

The program culminates in an exciting pitch competition where participants can showcase their new business concepts to local industry and financial community partners, with opportunities to win monetary awards and customized mentorships with professionals in the field.

The program runs from September 2nd to October 28th.
