This week, SCFR is observing #SAFETYSTANDDOWN in conjunction with the IAFC - International Association of Fire Chiefs, the National Volunteer Fire Council and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This year's theme is "rebuild rehab"--focusing on firefighters and EMS personnel taking care of themselves, at work and at home and throughout the week we'll be sharing information here as well. Today, is a toasty one outside, be sure if you have to spend extended periods of time outside to stay hydrated and take breaks.

Today's #NationalVolunteerMonth Station is White Oak Volunteer Rescue Squad, which was established in the early 1990s. Their volunteers helped contribute to the more than 88,000 hours Stafford County volunteers contributed last year. You can often find them and their ambulances providing standby services for high school football games.

Did you know that more than 40% of calls to Virginia poison control centers in 2019 involved children under the age of 5? Be sure to store things like medication, household cleaners and other potential poisons in secured locations AND out of reach of children.

“NEVER FORGET”

08/30/2020

This was just announced by the Stafford Co. Sheriff's Department:

We are pleased to announce that Stafford County now has the capability to receive texts to 911.

When should I text 9-1-1?

• Text-to-9-1-1 is intended primarily for use in three emergency scenarios:
1. For an individual who is deaf, hard-of-hearing, or has a speech disability.
2. For someone who is in a situation where it is not safe to place a voice call to 9-1-1.
3. A medical emergency that renders the person incapable of speech.
• ONLY text 9-1-1 in an emergency. Prank-texters can be identified and possibly prosecuted according to local laws/regulations

What are the challenges with text-to-9-1-1 service?

• As with all text messages, Texts-to-9-1-1 may take longer to receive and respond to than a voice call, does not provide the location of the texter and could be received out of order, or may not be received at all.
• Text GPS location information is not equal to current wireless location technology.
• Voice calls are real-time communication and Text-to-9-1-1 is not.
• Pictures or videos cannot be received by 9-1-1 at this time.
• If you include anyone else on your Text-to-9-1-1 it may not be received by 9-1-1.

How do I text to 9-1-1?

• Enter the numbers “911” in the “To” or “Recipient” field;
• The first text to 9-1-1 should be short, include the location of the emergency, and ask for police, fire or ambulance.
• Push the “Send” button.
• Answer questions and follow instructions from the 9-1-1 call taker.
• Text in simple words – no abbreviations or slang.
• Keep text messages short.

Stafford County Cemetery Committee

In the quiet sanctuaries of our own hearts, let each of us name and call on the One whose power over us is great and gentle, firm and forgiving, holy and healing ...

Today we remember and pay tribute to the men and women of the Armed Services who have died in the defense of our nation; from the days of the Revolution to these days in the Middle East. All have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we hold so dear.

On this day we especially ask that you would hold for ever all who suffered, those who returned scarred by warfare, those who waited anxiously at home, and those who returned wounded, and disillusioned; those who mourned, and those communities that were diminished and suffered loss.

Remember too those who acted with kind compassion, those who bravely risked their own lives for their comrades, and those who in the aftermath of war, worked tirelessly for a more peaceful world.

And as you remember them, remember us, O Lord; grant us peace in our time and a longing for the day when people of every language, race, and nation will be brought into the unity of Your kingdom

We humbly ask this in the name of all that is holy. Amen
