Too many veterans go from war to welfare

It is unconscionable that we are condemning thousands of young veterans who served their country to life on the dole rather than enabling them to re-enter the workforce with the necessary accommodations.

On behalf of American Legion Post 290, we would like to congratulate the United States Marine Corps' on it's 240th birthday.

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune commemorated the Marine Corps' 240th birthday with its annual Joint Daytime Ceremony at Liversedge Field on base Nov. 6. The ceremony, which rededicated the National and Marine Corps Colors, involved Marines from II Marine Expeditionary Force, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, major subordinate commands, other tenant commands, and Marine Corps Installations East - Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The birthday pageant included the traditional cake-cutting ceremony and a procession of the Marine Corps period uniforms dating from 1775 to the present. (U.S. Marine Corps photos by Lance Cpl. You might recognize this familiar face here in Dripping Springs. They call him Shorty, but don’t be fooled. This hometown hero is larger than life! Join us as we salute 76-year old Shorty Barnett, Vietnam Veteran and true patriot.

After serving our country proudly in the 1960s, he returned home to build a thriving Veteran community, establishing local chapters of the VFW Post 2933 and American Legion Post 290 and becoming the inspiration for Patriots' Hall of Dripping Springs, a 10-acre retreat for Veterans and their families. I felt compelled to post here and speak about American Legion Post 290.

I am so enjoying this post and all the members. I volunteer twice a week running the bingo paper sales and it is a wonderful place, bustling with activity and I look forward to it twice a week. The laughter is contagious and I love hanging out with my Legion Riders there.

This post accomplishes monumental things, in spite of the pandemic. We still had a Children's Christmas party, bingo twice a week, Legion Riders are active and growing, Ladies Auxiliary operates in the kitchen, the Honor Guard is awesome and for me, personally, the post has been a world of fellowship and comraderie that fills me with joy everytime I am there. Its been one year and I wanted to say thank you, Post 290 for welcoming me there with such open arms and giving me a new home away from home.
Golf For A Cause! $75 per person, teams of 4. Lake of the Woods Golf Course. Proceeds go to Blue Star Mothers of Fredericksburg Missions, such as postage for sending care packages 📦 to our troops deployed and more. Email: [email protected] We hope you will join us for this amazing cause.

**A Message from Post 290 Bingo**

First, we would like to thank you for playing Drive-In Bingo with us during Phase II. Now that we are entering phase III, we are trying to provide Bingo in the safest way for every player to enjoy. Therefore, we are going to continue with Drive-In Bingo.
Our main concern is you, our players! Due to the size of our hall and the physical distance requirements, we would have to limit our players to 62. We have had some large crowds, and do not want to limit our attendance, and limit the fun, for people who would like to get out of the house and join our program.
Below are some changes to our program in Phase III.
1) We will hold bingo on Fridays only
2) You may bring a table and/or chairs to set up outside your car
3) There will be a pull tab table outside for walk-up sales. Six feet social distancing and masks will still be required.
Thank you for all of your support during this time of the unknown. We feel that it would be safer to be more separate as we see how the area does with this phase of reopening. When we feel safe, we will move back indoors. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email or call the Post 290 Bingo Manager.

Sincerely,
The Bingo Crew

Manager Noel Lowery
