Latest stretch of Belmont-Ferry Farm Trail System nears completion

The new .73-mile extension—scheduled for completion in September—runs from John Lee Pratt Memorial Park, below Chatham Manor, along the Rappahannock River, to its endpoint at Chatham Bridge.

Heavy rains and river flooding earlier this year did not deter contractors from working on the latest stretch of Stafford County’s Belmont–Ferry Farm Trail.

Cycling lanes reduce fatalities for all road users, study shows: Roads are safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists in cities with robust bike facilities

"In the most comprehensive look at bicycle and road safety to date, researchers at the University of Colorado Denver and the University of New Mexico discovered that it's not the cyclists, but the infrastructure built for them, that is making roads safer for everyone."

The most comprehensive study of bicycle and road safety to date finds that building safe facilities for cyclists is one of the biggest factors in road safety for everyone. Bicycling infrastructure -- specifically, separated and protected bike lanes -- leads to fewer fatalities and better road-safety...

Protect Yourself! Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says

A 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for *all* users of the road (ie, not just the cyclists).

Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

How will Autonomous Vehicles and cyclists interact? Some localities are already finding out.
Shortly after Uber began testing Semi-Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) on Pittsburgh’s streets in September 2016, Bike Pittsburgh launched a survey to capture how Pittsburghers who bike and walk feel about sharing the road with this new technology. Two years later, they relaunched the survey to see how Pittsburghers’ impressions of AVs has changed.

The FHWA Office of Safety will soon publish the Guide for Scalable Risk Assessment Methods for Pedestrians and Bicyclists (Report No. FHWA-SA-18-032) which outlines eight sequential steps to develop risk values, and describes the scope and nature of each step, including guiding principles. Practitioners can use these scalable risk assessment methods, as well as an online spreadsheet tool, to evaluate pedestrian and bicyclist risk at different geographic scales to inform program and project funding decisions. This webinar will provide an overview of these scalable risk assessment methods for pedestrians and bicyclists. Panelists from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), and the FHWA will share the new guidance and spend time responding to discussion questions from attendees.

Proposed Federal Law Aims To Save Lives with Vehicle Guards

In 2012, after several fatal collisions between trucks and bicyclists, Boston installed guard rails on their trucks. The pilot project proved guards don’t affect serviceability, ability to mount curbs, or maneuverability in debris and snow.

U.S. Senators introduced the Stop Underrides Act of 2017 legislation aimed at keeping cars, bicyclists, and pedestrians from sliding under a truck’s body or trailer. Such incidents are often fatal even at low speed, killing more than 300 people every year.

‘Underride guards’ prevent fatal car crashes and rear wheel crush hazard to cyclists and pedestrians.
