Extremely cold weather is in the forecast for the upcoming weekend, putting cattle at risk.

When the temperature is below the lower critical temperature (LCT), a cow in adequate body condition with a heavy winter coat will use energy to maintain body temperature. When the wind chill dips below 19 F, cattle need extra energy to keep warm. They will eat more and need higher-quality feed to compensate for the cold.

Attention Missouri livestock producers, you may be eligible for new financial incentives for incorporating climate-smart grazing practices.

The enrollment for these incentives is open until Jan. 31, 2024, providing a great opportunity for more farmers to receive support for incorporating regenerative grazing methods.

Farmers enrolled in the regenerative grazing program receive $50 per acre for implementing a management-intensive grazing plan on the enrolled pastures. The plan needs to be in writing and can be done in conjunction with attending an MU grazing school or from having participated in one in recent years.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer.

Actually, it was most likely a caribou.

Caribou and reindeer are almost identical, sharing the same genus and species name. A big difference is geography: reindeer live in northern Europe and Asia while caribou are in North America. Although they look almost identical, caribou can be identified by having longer legs and leaner bodies. (Makes it easier to target unsuspecting grandparents walking through the snow.) Reindeer are also typically more sedentary and have thicker fur. (There’s a rumor at least one has a red nose, but they could just be cold.) In conclusion, watch out for wildlife. ⁣

P.S. No grandmas or caribou were hurt in the writing of this post. Some eggnog was dropped.

To ensure success as a beef producer, it's important to make small changes in three key areas: plants, animals, and business. Experienced producers understand the importance of taking a holistic approach and planning for the ups and downs of the industry.

In order to increase profits, it is recommended to follow these tips:

1. Create a separate bull pasture.
2. Listen to your veterinarian's recommendations.
3. Invest in high-quality cattle handling facilities.
4. Install sturdy fences for weaning.
5. Maintain a 50% surplus of hay inventory.
6. Conduct regular soil tests.
7. Consider incorporating native warm-season grasses into pastures.
8. Implement rotational grazing techniques.
9. Familiarize yourself with risk insurance programs.
10. Seek guidance from a farm tax preparer.
