Today Assistant Chief Frank Santore was given the Medal of Valor from the Monmouth County Fire Marshallโs Office for saving a life. We are proud and honored to have Assistant Chief Santore as a member of 16-1.
On January 8, 2025 at approximately 1946 hours, Station 16-1 was dispatched to the area of 235 Jackson Mills Road for a report of a vehicle crash with passengers entrapped which escalated to a vehicle fire with entrapment. Assistant Chief Santore arrived on location approximately four minutes later and found the vehicle engine compartment to be on fire with the driver unconscious and still entrapped in the vehicle. The fire was quickly spreading to the passenger compartment of the car. Assistant Chief Santore updated the county and all other responding units of the escalating situation. Assistant Chief Santore donned his turnout coat and ran to the vehicle with no due regard for personal safety. Assistant Chief Santore put himself between the spreading fire and the victim to shield the driver from the flames, while assisting Freehold Township Police Officer Tacopino to remove the driver from the vehicle. The driver suffered multiple injuries including bleeding, internal injuries and broken bones. Approximately four minutes after arrival, Assistant Chief Santore and Officer Tacopino dragged the victim away from the vehicle to the safety of the roadside. Within seconds, the car was fully involved and spreading to the immediate area in the woods. Engine 16-1-76 arrived on location and extinguished the fire.
In summary, if not for the heroic, quick, and decisive actions of Assistant Chief Santore, the victim wouldโve surely perished. Assistant Chief Santore exceeded the expectations and responsibilities of normal operational standards. He exemplifies the true spirit of being not only a great firefighter, but what a chief officer should be.
Congratulations!!
