“GUARDIANS OF THE FLAME”

On June 5th, officers from the Freehold Borough Police Department proudly participated in the New Jersey Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of the 2026 Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games held at The College of New Jersey. The Law Enforcement Torch Run consists of hundreds of local, statewide, and regional legs conducted each year to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics athletes. Members of law enforcement agencies throughout New Jersey unite in support of the athletes and the mission of Special Olympics.

Officers, civilian staff and family members from the Freehold Borough Police Department are proud supporters of Special Olympics New Jersey. In addition to participating in the Torch Run, department members assist by providing traffic control, attending opening ceremonies, presenting medals to athletes, running multiple legs of the run and supporting various administrative and fundraising efforts throughout the year.

The Freehold Borough Police Department & Freehold Borough PBA 159 remain committed to supporting the incredible athletes of Special Olympics New Jersey and helping make the Summer Games a memorable and successful event for all involved.

Beginning tonight, J.F. Kiely will be conducting road construction on Broadway (Route 79) in Freehold Borough. Work will take place on Broadway from the area of Douglas Road to Lockwood Avenue.

Road closures and detours will be in effect overnight from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Police officers will be on scene to assist with traffic control and direct motorists safely through the area. The project is expected to continue for a few weeks.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time when passing through the area and to follow all posted detour signs and directions from law enforcement officers.

LOT CLOSED FOR PARKING.

On July 1, 2026 the overflow parking lot located on Jackson Street will no longer be accessible for public parking . ALL VEHICLES must be removed from the lot by July 15, 2026. Any vehicle that has failed to be removed by July 15, 2026 will be towed at the owners expense.

Today a couple of our officers had the pleasure of meeting Aniko who is visiting Freehold from Hungary. She traveled here to see Bruce Springsteen’s hometown. She was lucky enough to run into two of Freehold’s Finest with Officer Jorge Segoviano and Officer Brian Ruegger. They answered some questions about Springsteen and they engaged in some conversations about policing in the United States. This is not at a planned event, but is the definition of community policing. Great job by our officers and welcome to New Jersey Aniko, and thanks for visiting Freehold.

This year marks the 43rd anniversary of New Jersey law enforcement officers serving as the "Guardians of the Flame" in support of the Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games, which will be held at The College of New Jersey on June 6 and 7.

Tomorrow, June 5, more than 3,000 law enforcement officers from across the state will participate in the annual Torch Run, carrying the Flame of Hope through their communities and ultimately delivering it to the Opening Ceremonies at The College of New Jersey, which begin at 7:30 PM.

Here in Freehold Borough, our Torch Run is expected to begin between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Our officers will start at ShopRite and travel down South Street to Main Street, where we will turn left. We will then continue to Manalapan Avenue, make a right turn, and complete our 2.2-mile leg at Jersey Freeze. There, we will proudly pass the torch to our brothers and sisters from the Freehold Township Police Department as they continue the journey.

We will be live-streaming our run, so we encourage everyone to tune in or come downtown and cheer on the runners as they pass through the Borough.

As the Torch Run moves through town, motorists may experience brief traffic delays. If you are traveling in the area during that time, please use caution and be mindful of the runners and emergency vehicles accompanying the event.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to all of our officers who volunteer their time each year to support this incredible cause. Their dedication helps raise awareness and support for the athletes of Special Olympics New Jersey and exemplifies the spirit of service that makes this event so special.
