As a result of an ongoing partnership with the Department of War National Defense Education Program (NDEP) and a partnership with UWorld, Dr. John Yopp, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, is pleased to announce that the Foundation is awarding 454 Goldwater scholarships for the 2026-2027 academic year. Over 120 Goldwater Scholars participated in the 2025 Gulf Coast Undergraduate Research Symposium at Rice University. The symposium is designed to help emerging scientists sharpen one of the most vital skills in research: communication. Instead of poster sessions, GCURS invites undergraduates to step to the podium, explain their work, and field questions from faculty and graduate-student mentors. John Mateja, president of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship Foundation, praised the event’s impact.

“The networking I observed throughout the symposium will benefit all participants throughout their careers,” Mateja said. “The leadership of Rice University's administration and faculty and the Goldwater Scholar community are to be commended for making this possible. We look forward to a continuing relationship.”

Rice drew more than 400 of the nation’s brightest undergraduate researchers to its campus Nov. 8-10 for the 16th annual Gulf Coast Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Congratulations to two Goldwater Scholars at Penn State for being named Rhodes Trust Scholarship Finalists!

Three Penn Staters were selected as finalists for the prestigious and competitive Rhodes Scholarship. Anshuta Beeram, Nate Carey and Kueyoung Kim will participate in final interviews on Nov. 15 and 16.
