Allegany and Garrett Counties Bird Club Schedule of Activities April 9th through June 30th 2023,
Tuesday April 11th, 2023: Meeting, 7:00 pm at Frostburg State University, Compton Science Center in Room 226. Dr. Cody Kent, Assistant Professor in the Biology Department will be speaking on warbler diversity - looking at why we have so many warbler species and how they differ in plumage, behavior, and diet. His talk is aimed at a general audience, and all are invited to attend. You can learn more about Dr. Kent at his website https://codymkent.wordpress.com/. Saturday April 15th, 2023: Garrett County Ponds, 9:00 am. Meet at the Finzel Swamp parking area at 9:00 am. We’ll visit the Finzel Swamp, Piney Reservoir, Little Meadows Lake and New Germany State Park. Pack snacks and a drink. Questions or for more information contact Melissa at 240-920-8260.
Friday May 12th, 2023: Bird Walk at the Mill Run Campground on the Youghiogheny Lake at 8:00 am. Bill Blauvelt is the point person. Meet: 8:00 am at the parking area at the Campground at the end of Mill Run Road (off the Friendsville Addison Road) north of Friendsville. Saturday May 13th, 2023: May Bird Count. Please plan to volunteer. In Garrett County the County Coordinator is Duane Bailey. He can be reached at [email protected]. In Allegany County contact is Mark Eanes. He can be reached at [email protected].
May 19th, 20th & 21st, 2023: Maryland Ornithological Society Annual Convention in Garrett County at the WISP. Field trips to local hot spots with expert guides, banquet and guest speaker, afternoon presentations, poster sessions, silent auction, social hours, vendors and more. Saturday June 3rd, 2023: Bird Walk at C&O Canal at from Town Creek Aqueduct to Oldtown at 8:00 am. Bill Blauvelt is the point person. This hike is targeting a BBA3 block to increase data on breeding bird activity. Meet at 8:00 am at the Oldtown parking lot for the C&O Canal. We will leave a car at Oldtown then drive east to the Town Creek Parking lot to walk west toward Oldtown. Participants have the option of walking the 5 miles to Oldtown or doing an out and back and turning back at any time they may want. Pack drinks, snack and/or lunch. June 2023, Date and time to be determined. Bird Club Planning Meeting. The meeting will cover field trip planning and meeting presentation suggestions for the 2023 – 2024 schedule that runs from September 2023 through August of 2024. Please plan to attend and share your suggestions for next year’s schedule along with your ideas on supporting the continued growth of the AG Bird Club.
Tuesday June 13th, 2023: Meeting at Garrett Community College at 7:00 pm. Room location to be determined. Nick Liadis, Executive Director of BirdLab.org, will speak on "Bird collisions and how to make a bird-friendly building and yard". Nick is an architect by training and founder of BirdLab.org which conducts bird banding, outreach and education in the Pittsburg region. Learn more about Nick and Bird Lab at http:birdlab.org . Saturday June 17th, 2023: Bird Walk on 15 Mile Creek Rd, Green Ridge State Forest at 8:00 am. Take Rt 68 to the 15 Mile Creek Rd exit. Turn left at the stop sign and drive 1 – 2 miles to the 15 Mile Creek Rd (dirt road) on the left. Melissa Hensel is the point person. This hike is targeting a BBA3 block to increase data on breeding bird activity. Meet at the small parking area at the road’s entrance. Saturday June 24th, 2023: Bird Walks at Sang Run, Saturday Mornings at 8:30 thru July. The walks are led by Sang Run State Park Rangers. Meet near the Friends Delight Store at Sang Run. Parking is available at the state park or at the Youghiogheny River access parking lot on the left approximately 1/4th mile beyond the park.
