History is showing up in some pretty creative places across South Carolina. 🇺🇸🏖️

At the annual Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpting Competition on the Isle of Palms, David Burt and his colleagues from LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD. took home Best in Show with an impressive sand sculpture of the palmetto fort that became famous during the Battle of Sullivan’s Island in June 1776. Built in just three hours, the sculpture pays tribute to one of South Carolina’s most iconic Revolutionary victories.

We love seeing communities find unique ways to celebrate and commemorate the people, places, and moments that helped shape our nation. Swipe through to see the winning sculpture and the incredible attention to detail. Huzzah! 🇺🇸⚔️

Before there was a United States, there were ordinary South Carolinians willing to risk everything for independence 🇺🇸 And next week, two of those Revolutionary War heroes will come to life on stages across the Upstate.

Join Rebecca Motte and Captain Henry Felder as they share their remarkable stories through History Alive!, with performances in Abbeville, Greenville, Liberty, and Spartanburg beginning June 12.

As America approaches the 250th anniversary of independence, we’re proud to partner with Greenville Chautauqua Festival to bring these powerful stories to communities across the region.

Listen as Chris Weatherhead with Actors Theatre of South Carolina shares how she became part of the project. And be sure to watch through to the end for the full schedule of events. Save it, screenshot it, and make plans to experience one of these unforgettable performances in person.

Did you know South Carolina had its own Navy? ⚓🇺🇸

This weekend, we joined our partners from the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust, Calhoun County 250, and community supporters to celebrate the official opening of the Commodore Alexander Gillon site and honor the legacy of one of Revolutionary South Carolina’s most influential naval leaders.

The event was made even more special with members of the Fishburn family in attendance, direct descendants of Commodore Gillon, helping connect past and present in a meaningful way.

Gillon’s story is a reminder that South Carolina’s fight for independence happened on both land and sea🌊

⚓ THIS SUNDAY: Join us as we honor the life and legacy of Commodore Alexander Gillon, a Patriot leader whose service helped shape Revolutionary South Carolina🇺🇸

📍 Congaree Baptist Church
299 Old Belleville Road, St. Matthews, SC 29135
🗓 Sunday, May 31, 2026
⏰ 2:00 p.m.

Following the ceremony, visitors are invited to the gravesite (closest address: 358 Gully Horn Spring Trail, St. Matthews, SC 29135). Preserving this site was a joint effort between SC250, the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust, and Calhoun County 250.

During the Revolutionary War, Gillon aligned himself with the Patriot cause and, in 1778, accepted command of the South Carolina Navy. In addition to his naval service, Gillon served in the South Carolina Provincial Congress, the South Carolina House of Representatives, as the 13th Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina, and later represented South Carolina in the United States House of Representatives until his death in 1794.

Come be a part of honoring a Revolutionary South Carolinian whose story deserves to be told. Huzzah! ⚔️
