It is with profound sadness that the Garden City Police Department announces the passing of retired Police Chief Charles "Chuck" Wilmoth.

Chief Wilmoth devoted his career to serving the residents of Garden City with honor, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to public safety. Beginning his service as the department's 1962 Patrolman of the Year, he rose through the ranks to become Chief of Police, leading the department with professionalism, vision, and compassion. Throughout his career, he championed traffic safety and impaired driving enforcement, earning national recognition for his work and serving on committees that helped shape law enforcement practices across the country. While his accomplishments brought distinction to our department, those who served with him remember him most for his leadership, mentorship, and genuine dedication to both his officers and the community he proudly served.

Chief Wilmoth's legacy lives on in the department he helped build and in the many officers whose careers were influenced by his guidance and example. His years of dedicated service left an enduring mark on the City of Garden City and the profession of law enforcement.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Chief Wilmoth's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Chief Charles "Chuck" Wilmoth. Thank you for your lifetime of service to Garden City.

Your watch has ended, but your legacy will never be forgotten

Air Quality Update

Air Quality Update

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has pushed air quality to Hazardous (Maroon AQI) in Wayne County and Southeast Michigan. Combined with today's warm temperatures, these conditions can pose health risks for everyone.

Wildfire smoke can affect everyone's health, but children, older adults, pregnant people, outdoor workers, and those with heart or lung conditions, including asthma, are at greater risk.

Protect yourself today:

✅ Stay indoors in air conditioning when possible and reduce activity levels
✅ Keep windows and outside doors closed
✅ Run A/C on recirculate (if available) and use a MERV-13 or higher filter when possible
✅ Avoid activities that create indoor air pollution, such as burning candles, smoking, or vacuuming
✅Seek an indoor place with A/C if you experience coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning of the eyes, nose, or throat. Seek medication attention for any persistent or worsening symptoms.
