The Shawangunk Mountains reach 70 miles from High Point State Park in New York all the way to Rosendale, New York. This unique environment has been identified by the Nature Conservancy as "one of the Earth's last great places." A greenway across the mountains is protected by one of New York's most popular parks, Minnewaska State Park Preserve, a number of state forests managed by the Department of

Environmental Conservation, and the Mohonk Preserve, which is New York's largest not-for-profit member-supported nature preserve. Many of the trails in the Shawangunks, including the 70-mile Shawangunk Ridge Trail, are maintained by volunteers of the NY-NJ Trail Conference. To volunteer please send us a message.

The image for September in my Catskill & Shawangunk Scenes 2025 Calendar is a photo of a newly constructed bridge on the new High Point Carriage Road. The new carriage road connects Sam's Point with Minnewaska State Park, and enables long bike tours across much of the Northern Shawangunks. I was fortunate to ride the new carriage road the first day it was open to the public in September 2023, which is when I shot this image.Thanks to the work of Open Space Institute, the public can now cycle from Sam's Point, to Minnewaska and then continue on to Mohonk Preserve. The Shawangunks are becoming a cyclist's paradise. DM me for more info if you'd like.
