Good Evening Southwest Middle School families!

This is Dr. Davria, with this week's information and updates .

We are excited to officially kick off the school year this week!

First, a reminder that Open House is Monday, August 10. This is an opportunity for students and families to meet their teachers and get ready for the year ahead. Families with last names beginning with A through M are invited from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. Families with last names beginning with N through Z are invited from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, August 12, is the first day of school! Student drop-off begins at 8:00 a.m., and the school day begins at 8:30 a.m. Dismissal will begin at approximately 3:25 p.m.

As we prepare for arrival and dismissal, I want to share a few important reminders.

For our student walkers, please remind your child not to cut through the parking lot. Walkers must stay on the sidewalks and only cross the road at designated crosswalks. These procedures are in place to keep our students safe.

For our car riders, drop-off is in the front of the school building. Drivers, please remain in the car-rider lanes and pull all the way forward to the front of the building. Do not park and drop off or pick up your student. We also ask that you remain mindful of other vehicles and our student walkers as you enter and leave campus.

For our bus riders, you should receive a phone call before the first day of school with your child’s approximate pick-up time and location. Please be patient during the first few days and allow for a 10- to 15-minute window, as our drivers adjust to new students and routes. If your child plans to ride a bus and you have not already done so, make sure you have completed our bus rider form. The form can be found on the Southwest Middle School website and on our social media pages.

Finally, a reminder for our incoming sixth graders: If your student is interested in joining band, please visit our website or social media pages for the QR code to sign up.

Roadrunner families, we are so excited to welcome our students back on Wednesday! Thank you for helping us make arrival and dismissal safe and successful for everyone.

Welcome back, staff! Today was our first official day of full staff here at Southwest Middle. Our teachers are back and excited for the school year!!!

Special thanks to Communities in Schools for supplying door prizes for our teachers, and Joey Clinton from ValuTeachers for a delicious (and on theme!) concession stand lunch for our staff!!

Don’t forget, Open House is Monday 8/10! Students with last name A-M are invited to come in and meet their teachers from 5-5:45, and last name N-Z from 5:45-6:30.

Families, please call or email the school if your student will not be returning to Southwest for the 26/27 school year. Due to North Carolina's Compulsory Attendance Law, Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) are not permitted to withdraw students unless they have verified the student's enrollment with another Local Educational Agency. Hello Southwest Middle School families!

This is Dr. D'Avria, principal of Southwest Middle School, with some information as we prepare to start the 2026-2027 school year.

First, we are excited to welcome our incoming sixth graders this Thursday for our Sixth Grade Orientation from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Please remember this event is for students only. Drop off and pick up will take place in front of the main entrance. During orientation, students will learn what it means to be a Roadrunner, take a tour of the building, and meet our teachers, staff, and administrators. We can't wait to welcome our newest students to Southwest!

Our Open House will be held on Monday, August 10, for all sixth, seventh, and eighth graders and their families. To help with parking and traffic, families with last names beginning with A through M are invited to attend from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m., and families with last names beginning with N through Z are invited from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. This is a great opportunity for students and families to meet teachers and prepare for a successful school year.

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 12. Our school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Students will receive their class schedules when they arrive on the first day.

If your child plans to ride the bus, please be sure you have completed the bus rider form, which can be found on the Southwest Middle School website or on our page.

Finally, our girls softball team is looking for enthusiastic players who want to learn the game. No experience is necessary! All you need is a current sports physical and a pair of gym shoes or cleats. Tryouts will continue August 3rd through August 7th. We encourage any interested student to come out and give it a try.
