Today, the Fort Bend County Commissioners Court voted to eliminate three Associate Judge positions in our District Courts, effective December 31, 2026. This is the same proposal that we spoke against last year. It was not a good idea then and it’s not a good idea now. Just like last year, not one person spoke in support of eliminating these positions, and no explanation was provided for why this decision was being made. I am deeply disappointed by this vote.
Decisions that directly affect the operation of our courts should be made with a full understanding of the work being performed, the demands on our dockets, and the consequences for the people who rely on our justice system. I am concerned that this decision was made without that understanding and without meaningful input from those who work in the courts every day.
Fewer judicial resources will place additional pressure on our courts. That means potential delays for families seeking resolution, children whose cases require timely attention, victims waiting for justice, defendants awaiting due process, and law enforcement and other agencies relying on our courts to function effectively.
Ultimately, the people of this county will bear the consequences of this decision. This should never be about politics. It should be about what is best for the people we were elected to serve.
