Jill Hicks, candidate for Sussex County Council District 5, announces medical treatment
I want the public to know that I've recently been diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Some people may have noticed a swelling in my face the last several weeks for the removal of a cyst. I’ve had a full PET scan, and the news is good: the condition localized, it's treatable, and doctors expect a full recovery. While treatments will last 7 weeks, I should be able to keep a full schedule during much of that time.
Why am I telling you this? To let the public know that I believe in transparency. To get ahead of any potential rumors. This is my story. I am running for public office, and you have a right to know.
I am grateful for the swift diagnosis by Dr. Julian Amin, ENT & Allergy of Delaware and the Helen Graham Cancer Center, Christiana. I am grateful that my treatments will begin immediately at the Tunnell Cancer Center in Rehoboth Beach. The way these teams of doctors, social workers, and nutritionists work together is remarkable.
This experience underscores for me what all of us know, and that is the need for world-class, accessible, and affordable treatment for our growing population here in Sussex County. I feel blessed that this is available to me, and if elected to County Council I will strive with renewed energy and commitment to ensure that excellent care is available to everyone in Sussex County.
I look forward to meeting District 5 voters in the run up to the November 3rd election. I will keep the public informed of my progress, and I thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes.
