Well, it's officially campaign season. Some new political candidates are claiming I want to defund the police or that I don't back law enforcement. Is that true? Not in the slightest. This comes after the Board of Commissioners has spent the last couple of weeks combing over our various department budgets, including the Sheriff's Dept.
So what started all this? Asking questions, like why is our County Law Enforcement spending higher than all counties of similar size (both in landmass and population). Why is our LE spending higher than the 8 largest counties, higher than all mid-sized counties, except Teton, and well above the statewide average of $312/person? I still don't have good answers for this yet, and some don't want me or other commissioners to ask these kinds of questions.
A big part of our jobs as Commissioners is to be fiduciaries of the public's hard-earned dollars. These are taxes you pay, and have every right to know where your money is going and how it's being spent. I can't speak for other commissioners, but what I can say is that my commitment to Campbell County is to deliver the most amount of services for the dollars you pay, all at the least amount of cost. I want to conserve what we have and be a good steward of your public resources, which is why it's important for commissioners to ask questions about how efficient we are with public funds so that you are getting the most from your dollars.
