This actual footage of two MH-60 Blackhawks being shot down in Mogadishu, Somalia, took place on Oct. 3, 1993. The events that took place in Mogadishu on Oct. 3 and 4, 1993, were later chronicled in the book “Black Hawk Down,” which became the movie of the same name.
Task Force RANGER was a joint special operations task force sent to capture Somali warlord Mohammed Farah Aideed. By the beginning of October 1993, the task force had successfully conducted six missions in the capital. During the seventh mission, the Somali militia shot down two MH-60 Black Hawks after the objective was secured.
An overwhelming Somali mob overran the second crash, killed the defenders and captured pilot CW3 Mike Durant who had been injured in the crash.
As day turned into night, the recovery operation at the first crash site continued and part of the raid force was trapped in the city when the fighting became so intense the extraction convoy was unable to reach them.
The battle continued throughout the night. Early morning 4 October a relief convoy finally broke through to the cut-off force and extracted them.
Seventeen TF Ranger and two 10th Mountain Division Soldiers were killed in the battle and its aftermath and 106 wounded. The Somali death toll is estimated in the hundreds.
Master Sgt. Gary Gordon and Sgt. 1st Class Randall Shughart were honored for their bravery and heroism during the battle when the President presented their widows the Medal of Honor posthumously.
We commemorate the lives of all the Americans lost on that historic 1993 operation. We will never forget.
