We work to empower people to speak up for themselves, to have their voices heard and to effect personal and societal change. People First Wisconsin challenges the institutions, social policies and community attitudes that prevent people with disabilities from achieving their full potential as citizens.

Mission: People First Wisconsin helps people to speak up for themselves, to start and support local self-advocacy groups, to work together with self-advocates across Wisconsin on issues important to our membership, to work with other advocacy groups in Wisconsin to change things that need to be changed and to be part of the decisions that effect people with disabilities in Wisconsin.

January 20, 2021

Good morning members,

I hope to find you well. I apologize for my letter being late as it has been a busy week. This Monday I was able to take the day off of work to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and was very busy yesterday. I hope you were able to celebrate on Monday as well. Today is also a special day, as we will be welcoming our new President of the United States into office. This is a big day for our country, and for the world. I am looking forward to 2021, and I hope that we can all find peace and unity, and put COVID-19 behind us.

I hope that everyone is able to go back to work, and back to seeing each other as soon as possible. I also hope that kids will all be able to go back to school, and that high school seniors will be able to experience and celebrate a normal graduation.

We only get one chance at life, and right now this happens to be a part of it. We need to be thankful for every day that we are on this earth. So far this year I have been making strides towards a healthier and happier lifestyle. I encourage you to do the same! Last year was a very difficult year for most people, including myself. I lost 4 people that were close to me, and have had quite the obstacles to overcome.

I regret to inform you that Dolores, who is an advocate of the state, lost her son Albert last week Thursday. Dolores advocated for her son for good healthcare, and good care all the way around. He will truly be missed. It is very difficult to lose people close to you, and I will need my time to grieve. This news put me over the edge a bit, but I will find a way to pick myself back up, and get back to my spunky self. I hope that you are all okay, and have not had to go through anything traumatic lately. Please know that you are all in my prayers, and that I will always be there for you. Life is not always easy, but we must persevere.

As for COVID-19, numbers are currently going down. If you are concerned about getting the vaccination, ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž just ๐›๐ž ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ. You can also call your IRIS Care Worker, Family Care Worker, or your pharmacy with any questions you may have. Wisconsin disability community demands better voting access

โ€œThere is no way that a blind person may vote independently using vote by mail,โ€ Staats said. She voted by mail in the April and August elections with help from others, but the prospect of her vote not counting in November was โ€œa terrifying thing.โ€ Family members who could assist her in filling out an absentee ballot held different political views than she does, and she felt they would almost certainly change her vote. She finally found someone to safely get her to an early voting location to use an accessible voting machine.

Voting access issues have persisted for Wisconsin's disability community for years, but the COVID-19 pandemic brought them to the forefront.

Good morning members,

I hope to find you well this morning. I wanted to let you know that next week's letter will be one day late as I will be taking the day off for ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ, so you can expect it on Tuesday.๐ˆ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐›๐ž ๐ญ๐š๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š๐ง๐ฒ ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ž๐ฆ๐š๐ข๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐๐š๐ฒ, and will be back on Tuesday. If you have any concerns please reach out to our Office Manager, Kate. If you have any pressing matters, please know that you can always reach out to the Cope Line or the 1800 Suicide Hotline posted below.

Iโ€™m not sure if youโ€™ve heard, but we recently lost a great leader named Dan Remick. Dan was a long time People First Member and a great advocate for people with intellectual disabilities and those without. I received this news on Friday, and posted it on Facebook. May he rest in peace. We only have one chance at ๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž, so ๐๐จ๐ง'๐ญ ๐ญ๐š๐ค๐ž ๐ข๐ญ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐. We all have a tendency of putting things off, and we may never get the chance to experience them. When I am in the moment I find it best to just do it, and try not to put it aside. Tomorrow is never promised.

As the Director of People First WI, I am trying to be my best self so that I can help you be yours. Do not wait until tomorrow to do
things you want to do today. I have lost 4 family members in 2020. We Just buried my Aunt on Saturday, and 3 weeks prior to that we buried my Uncle. I have learned a lot from this last year, and will not take a single day for granted. The reason I bring this up is to help motivate you to ๐›๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐›๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐œ๐š๐ง, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐›๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž each and ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐š๐ฒ.

New year's resolutions do not always work right away, so please ๐๐จ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐š๐ข๐ญ๐ก if your goals do not come instantly. If we love ourselves we will be able to accomplish anything we want to, whether it's losing weight, being more healthy, or whatever your goal(s) may be.

I plan on getting the vaccination myself, I will just need to meet with my doctor first for discussion.

Thank you all for reading my letter, and I wish you all a blessed week! You can call my cell phone @ 414-852-6462 8:00am - 7:00pm, Monday - Thursday. Are you a girl or woman (ages 5+) with a disability? We would love to have you participate in WI Miss Amazing! We are a non-profit organization with a mission to help girls and women with disabilities gain confidence in a supportive environment. We host an annual event that works on self advocacy, building life skills, nurturing a sisterhood, and increasing visibility in the community. Our 2020 event is on Feb 21-22, and the only cost to participate is 5 canned food items that we then donate back into the community. You can go to www.missamazing.org to find more information and register to participate!
Please delete if not appropriate. As a mother with a child with diagnoses of cerebral palsy and autism living in Wisconsin, I decided to go back to school to study the connection between work opportunities (chores and general work) and the quality of life for individuals (ages 15-35) with intellectual and developmental disabilities, living in the Midwestern states. I was hoping you can help me distribute my survey to the guardians of individuals with IDD (ages 15-35). There is an incentive for the guardians who complete the study. $30 for the first 30 people to complete the study and an entry for a four $100 gift certificates from Amazon. The survey can be reached through this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Guardian4ChildWithIDD Thank you in advance!
