It's been a beautiful day at the Incident Command Post in Glide. The ICP is downsizing rapidly and by the weekend you'll notice everyone has moved out. We appreciate the local communities support and kindness.

Since the start of the Jack Fire on July 5th, and the Rough Patch Complex on July 29th, thousands of firefighters have passed through local communities on their way to assist. To give you an idea the kitchen staff has served roughly 65,187 breakfasts, 82,351 lunches, and 68,517 dinners to firefighters.

Communication is key when it comes to carrying out ground and air operations safely throughout the fire. In order for help to be just a call away for crews spread across hundreds of miles, a network of 17 mountaintop repeaters has been established and is maintained by the incident. Providing seamless communication between Incident Command in Glide, to Sugarloaf Mtn. in the north, east to Tokatee Spike camp, and South to where USFS Road 28 heads west with the South Umpqua is a major logistical challenge. Everyone needs radios, batteries and a good communications plan.

Be alert for heavy equipment and trucks on roadways in and around the fire area.

Contractors from local communities and other parts of Oregon are busy aiding repair efforts. They are loading slash and logs and hauling them away for processing. Removing the slash and logs cut along roads to build fire lines is important to protect the roads, drainages, and forest health.

Be alert for heavy equipment and trucks on roadways in and around the fire area.

The Burned Area Emergency Response or BAER Team that is working on the Rough Patch Complex and the Jack Fire have released soil burn severity maps and determined that less than one percent of any of the fires resulted in high soil burn severity. Overall, the maps depict a mixed-severity burn of moderate, low, and very low/unburned severity.

“The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) program is designed to identify and manage potential risks to resources on National Forest System lands and reduce these threats through appropriate emergency measures to protect human life and safety, property, and critical natural and cultural resources. BAER is an emergency program for stabilization work that involves time-critical activities to be completed before the first damaging event to prevent damage or loss of those critical values from changes caused by the post-fire environment.”

Please be alert for increased heavy equipment traffic on roads around the Jack Fire and Rough Patch Complex.

While heavy fuels like logs, trees, and tree roots may continue to smolder or ignite over the coming weeks, all of the lighter fuels around them are dampened and resistant to fire. That means that the risk of the fire spreading now is extremely low. But work is not complete.

Once a wildland fire has passed through an area a Burned Area Emergency Response Team or BAER Team is quickly sent into the burned area. The BAER Team is made up of experts in natural and cultural resources. These experts survey the burned areas to help the team rapidly determine whether there are urgent threats to human life, safety, property, or critical natural and cultural resources. BAER teams must work quickly as they only have 10 days to survey. Once their survey is complete the BAER Team will produce a detailed report on what are the needs to help repair, replace or construct to prevent degradation of land or resources impacted by the fire.
