"Your clients are attempting to stop what the City Council, the School Committee and others believe is important, for the children of Gloucester to go to a new, state of the art, safe, and comfortable location. That is what you're trying to stop." -Judge Thomas Dreschler

We’d like to give a public “thank you” to those who opposed Question 3. Thank you for sharing your opinions and standing up for what you believe. Thank you for writing letters and standing with signs and sharing your views on Facebook. Thanks to you, our city got to think about many sides of the school issue. The vote ended up more informed and debated thanks to you.

It’s a sign of how wonderful Gloucester is that many people felt so strongly about this issue. If our city were a generic bedroom community that lacked character and beauty, fewer people would have cared. But that’s not who we are in Gloucester. Instead, many people got emotional precisely because we care so much about our city. Despite our disagreement on this one issue, all of us have that in common: We all love Gloucester. Now that the vote is over, we hope that love of our city will bring us back together.

So we’d like to ask that whichever side you were on, each of us make an effort to reconnect with each other. Send a text or a Facebook message to someone you disagreed with, just to say hi. Next time you’re at the post office or down the Boulevard and see someone you disagreed with, say hello and ask how they’re doing. Whichever side you were on, make an effort to reach out, say hello and reconnect with each other.

Chances are, despite our disagreement on this one issue, there’s a lot more we agree about. And one thing’s for sure – we all love Gloucester. Let's hope that'll be the thing that brings us together again.

The child from a modest apartment who’ll head off every morning to a new school with modern facilities that spark her love of learning.

That’s who this vote was for.

The parent working three jobs to make ends meet so his kids can get a better education and lead a better life.

That’s who this vote was for.

The teachers who’ll feel respected and valued in a new building where they’ll have the space and technology to do what they do best – teach our children.

That’s who this vote was for.

The City of Gloucester where our children will learn and grow in a modern, new school that lifts them up and challenges them and prepares them to be the future leaders of our city.

That’s who this vote was for.

Thank you to every supporter who held a sign in the rain, spoke at a public hearing, wrote a letter, attended a meeting, talked with a skeptical neighbor, delivered yard signs, passed out flyers, filmed a video, posted on Facebook or helped out in a hundred other ways. You showed that regular people who want to do a good thing for others can make a difference in our city.

You made a difference in the lives of that child, that parent, those teachers and our city. More than 400 Gloucester children and their families’ lives for each of the next 40 or 50 years will be better and brighter because of your work and today’s vote.

We are so proud of our city. Today’s vote made clear that in Gloucester, education matters. Teachers matter. Children matter. And the future of our city matters.

Thank you all.
