Vaping: A Pathway to Cigarette Experimentation

Evidence is accumulating, including from MTF, that vaping predicts future cigarette experimentation.

Thus high levels of vaping threatens to reverse some of the progress made in reducing cigarette smoking among U.S. adolescents over the past two plus decades. One worries that the large increase in nicotine vaping could lead to a stall in the decline in smoking or even an increase in adolescent cigarette smoking, after a long period of decline.

Most recently, new products, such as JUUL, have created brand-centric terms for product use (“JUULing”). For this resource, the entire category will be referred to as “e-cigarettes.”

Talk to your child, early and often.
The sooner you talk to your children about alcohol and other drugs, the greater chance you have of influencing their decisions.
Here are some tips for talking to your kids:

Know the Facts: Be a source of credible information and advice for your kids.
Listen, avoid criticism, and encourage an open dialogue: Kids are more likely to listen when they know you are on their side. Remember that your goal is to have a conversation, not deliver a lecture.
Talk with your child in advance about situations that may arise around alcohol. Discuss together ways to avoid uncomfortable situations and peer pressure.
Choose the right time to talk: Daily activities, like dinner time or driving in the car, are perfect opportunities to talk about alcohol and other drugs.

Alcohol & Drunk or Drugged Driving
Ever wonder where kids get their alcohol for parties? It’s no mystery: friends and family. Kids are starting to take their first drink as early as 4th grade, so it’s never too early to lock it up! Don’t give into the lie “all teens drink, so you might as well let them drink at home.” Not all teens drink, and making underage drinking easy for them is irresponsible, illegal and sometimes deadly. If you think your child is drinking alcohol, be awake when they get home, give them a hug and smell their breath. Be the excuse they need to say “No, I can’t. My parents will be awake when I get home.”
