Last year, Headwaters Trails Alliance received $16,368 to purchase a UTV so their crew could access burn scars to help the U.S. Forest Service with recovery work in the East Troublesome and Williams Fork burn scars.

During the Spring 2025 grant cycle, Headwaters Trails Alliance received $37,434 to purchase a Ski Doo Skandic Utility Sled snowmobile and grooming equipment to enhance their winter trail grooming program.

The Spring 2026 Open Lands, Rivers, and Trails grant cycle includes funding for an exciting new trail development project led by the West Grand Recreation Foundation.

Funded project:
🚵 Wolford Mountain SRMA Zone 3 Project – advancing plans for a future trail system with a mix of multi-use, biking, hiking, and adaptive-friendly trails near Kremmling

This project aims to create new outdoor recreation opportunities while thoughtfully planning for long-term sustainability and community benefit.

🌿 Advancing Riparian Restoration in Grand County 🌿

The Spring 2026 Open Lands, Rivers, and Trails grant cycle includes funding for a restoration planning effort led by Colorado Open Lands.

Funded project:
🐟 Riparian Reconnect: Upper Colorado River Restoration – identifying and advancing high-priority sites for low-tech, process-based restoration to improve stream and wetland health and support wildlife habitat

This project will help move key restoration opportunities toward implementation, with a focus on long-term ecological benefits across the Upper Colorado River basin.

🌿 Stream Management Plan Priority Projects, Conceptual Design & Planning – advancing the next phase of the Grand County Stream Management Plan by developing conceptual designs for high-priority restoration and enhancement projects across local river systems

This work helps turn science and community input into ready-to-implement projects that will improve river health, wildlife habitat, and water resources across Grand County.

🚧 Investing in a Safer, Smoother Fraser River Trail 🚧

The Spring 2026 Open Lands, Rivers, and Trails grant cycle includes funding for a key project led by the Town of Fraser, Colorado—focused on improving one of the Fraser Valley’s most heavily used trails.

Funded project:
🚴 Fraser Paved Trail Rehabilitation Project – repairing and repaving approximately 1.7 miles of multi-use trail to address significant surface damage and improve safety for cyclists, pedestrians, and year-round users

This critical corridor connects Fraser and Winter Park, and these improvements will enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall experience for everyone who uses it.

🥾 Supporting Trails from Wilderness to Town 🌲

The Spring 2026 Open Lands, Rivers, and Trails grant cycle includes funding for two important projects led by Headwaters Trails Alliance (HTA)—helping keep Grand County’s trails safe, accessible, and connected.

Funded HTA projects include:
🌲 Wilderness trail clearing to remove downed trees and improve access on remote trails
🚶‍♀️ Four Seasons Trail improvements to enhance safety, connectivity, and the overall user experience in the Fraser Valley

From backcountry routes to in-town connections, these projects support the trails we all rely on for recreation, access, and adventure.
