🚨Today is National First Responders Day 🚨

GCSAR recognizes and thanks all those teams and individuals in Grand County and across the country who are dedicated to keeping our communities safe.

We are proud to partner with these excellent agencies: Grand County Sheriff and local police departments, Grand County EMS, Grand County Firefighters and local fire protection districts, Flight for Life Colorado and MedEvac, Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment (CRAD), the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Colorado Search and Rescue Association, other Search and Rescue teams across Colorado who provide mutual aid, and additional organizations who support us in everything that we do.

Thank you to all public safety professionals for your service, courage and commitment to answering the call and supporting your communities and each other.

We are honored to stand alongside you

Recently GCSAR members were privileged to attend a SAR aviation fly-in hosted by the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control. Alongside other teams from the area, including Summit, Routt and Jackson counties, attendees became familiar with two aerial firefighting assets, the Multimission Aircraft N327SF and Type 1 Helicopter N3802C.

SAR members learned about the specialized technology and capabilities of these aircraft and were able to gain a better understanding of the ways in which they can support SAR operations.

GCSAR would like to thank the DFPC for this opportunity to train and collaborate with other regional agencies and strengthen our ability to work together during future multi-agency mission responses.

On September 22nd at 3:45 p.m., Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR) alongside Grand County EMS (GCEMS) and the Grand County Sheriff's Office (GSCO) responded to an iPhone crash alert in the area of Stillwater Pass. The Apple crash detection system alerted 911 that there may have been an accident based on the impact detected by the user's phone.

At 4:23 p.m. a GCSAR member and a GCSO deputy arrived on scene at the coordinates provided by the Apple crash detection system and located two subjects involved in a single UTV crash. The driver lost control of the UTV and drove off the side of the trail down a steep embankment, causing the UTV to rollover several times. The driver and passenger both sustained serious injuries as they rolled approximately 200 feet down the mountainside.

13 GCSAR members responded as well as multiple GCEMS members and GCSO deputies. The crash occurred approximately 7.5 miles up a rough 4x4 trail off Stillwater Pass.

Both subjects were treated for their injuries and packaged for transport to additional medical care. The male subject was transported down the mountain by GCSAR in a off-road rescue trailer to a Medevac helicopter. Due to serious life-threatening injuries, he was airlifted to the hospital by Medevac. The female subject was transported by UTV to the GCEMS ambulance and transported to the hospital for further medical treatment. Both subjects are extremely lucky to be alive.

This is the 2nd serious UTV crash that GCSAR has responded to in the past week. We'd like to remind everyone recreating in the backcountry on UTV's/ATV's to ride at a safe speed suitable to the terrain and know your limits.

In almost all cases, the crash detection alerts end up being false alarms. In this case, the 911 dispatcher heard background noise which indicated a response was necessary. They alerted the GCSO and GCSAR of the possible crash, which allowed for a rapid response resulting in two lives saved yesterday.

We'd like to thank all agencies involved including JeffCom 911, Grand County Sheriff's Office, Grand County EMS, OTT Outfitters, and MedEvac.

On the night of Friday, September 18, Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR) was paged at 11:29 PM to assist with a UTV accident in the Hot Sulphur Springs area.
The rider lost control of their UTV and fell approximately 250 feet down a steep embankment.

Twelve GCSAR members responded alongside Grand County EMS, Union Pacific Rail Road, Hot Sulphur Springs Fire, and the Grand County Sheriff's Office. Rescuers used multiple rope systems to lower rescue members, equipment, and medical supplies down to the subject, who was being attended to by a Grand County Sheriff's Office deputy and GCEMS. Additional rope systems were then used to raise the injured rider, team members and attendants up to the trail. The rider was transferred to Grand County EMS for further medical care and handed off to Med Evac. All GCSAR team members were out of the field by 4:00 AM.

We appreciate the coordinated efforts of all responding personnel and partner agencies.
GCSAR reminds riders to know their limits, ride at a speed suited to the terrain, and wear a helmet and seat belt.

INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN RESCUE DAY
On this weekend in 1948, mountain rescue pioneers from different countries gathered at the Wilden Kaiser at the invitation of the Austrian Alpine Club. They exchanged knowledge, shared experiences, and laid the foundation for what would become ICAR – the International Commission for Alpine Rescue – officially founded in 1955.

Today ICAR has grown to a network of 141 member organizations in 41 countries around the world.

GCSAR is proud to be a member of the Mountain Rescue Association, an ICAR organization.

This impressive global network reflects the strong spirit of networking, cooperation and shared commitment to saving lives in the mountains.

Today, we honor the spirit of collaboration and the tireless dedication of all our partners who often risk their lives to keep others safe in the mountains.
Thank you for your courage, commitment, and community.
