"We want our kids to feel safe and loved when they're in our building each and every day building that sense of belonging. Because when they feel safe and cared for, that's when the learning can happen."

Mrs. Wemhoff, Starr Elementary Principal, stopped by KRGI News this week to share how Starr gets students excited to be at school.

Here's a soundbite from her interview on "Community Connection".

Congratulations to this week's Staff Shout Out: Heather Caspersen, High School EL Newcomer teacher at Career Pathways Institute!

Here is what her nominator had to say:

"Heather has been working with Stuhr Museum and Rooted Books & Gifts to have Pedro Martin, author/illustrator of the graphic novel Mexikid work with our GISH Newcomer scholars. Pedro will be coming to Grand Island in September to conduct presentations and workshops about how he uses art and storytelling to share his family's immigration experience. This inspired the idea of working with students in the Newcomer program to create their own mini-memoirs in graphic novel style and have them work with Pedro Martin virtually during that process for advice and guidance. The students would then have the opportunity to have their creations displayed at Stuhr Museum for people to engage with alongside one of Pedro Martin's presentations. Way to go Heather, this is an amazing opportunity for our GISH Newcomer students!"
