Welcome to The Hayes Foundation
The Hayes Foundation: Hedge of Protection is a foundation created in loving memory of Hayes Morgheim, who was tragically murdered in a domestic violence homicide by

a friend's husband. In the wake of this devastating loss, we are choosing to transform pain into purpose by launching a mission that Hayes would have stood proudly behind.

🐾 Our Mission
The Hayes Foundation exists to provide critical support for survivors of domestic violence who have pets or service animals. We believe no one should have to choose between their safety and the safety of a beloved animal companion. Our foundation helps fund:
• Emergency boarding for pets
• Transportation for pets and service animals fleeing abuse
• Veterinary care during transitions
• Pet deposits or fees required for pet-friendly housing or shelters
• Basic supplies for survivors and their pets (food, leashes, crates, etc.)
________________________________________
💔 Why This Matters
• 71% of pet-owning survivors say their abuser threatened, harmed, or killed their pet.
• Nearly 50% delay leaving abuse because they can’t bring their pet.
• Many shelters do not accept pets, leaving survivors with impossible choices. No one should be forced to stay in danger because they love and want to protect their animal. We're here to change that.

🌿 The Name: The Hayes Foundation: Hedge of Protection
The name Hayes is derived from the Old English word 'hæg,' which means 'enclosure' or 'hedged area.' In a biblical context, this symbolism represents being protected and sheltered within the boundaries of God's divine presence. Furthermore, the significance of the name Hayes in biblical prophecy can be seen in Isaiah 32:2, which states, 'Each will be like a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land.' This verse highlights the idea that those bearing the name Hayes have the potential to bring comfort, protection, and solace to others in times of trouble, just as God does. The name “Hedge of Protection” symbolizes a safe boundary—both physical and emotional—between survivors and harm. It's a tribute to Hayes’ heart for safety, justice, and compassion for the vulnerable. Through this foundation, we seek to build those hedges around others in danger—especially the voiceless animals who provide comfort, protection, and unconditional love.

🐶 Hayes’ Legacy
Hayes left behind a cherished dog who was deeply bonded with him. The grief this animal has carried is a reminder of how real the trauma of violence is—not just for humans, but for animals, too. Our goal is to carry Hayes’ legacy forward by being a voice for both survivors and their pets.

Denim Day is a campaign in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign began after a ruling in Italy where a r**e conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the person who r**ed her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent.

Show your support on Wednesday by wearing denim. 🩵

Denim Day asks everyone to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.

This week is dedicated to learn about victimization, the effect victimization has on individuals, families, friends and the community, and to promote laws, policies, and programs to help victims of crime.

Listen. Act. Advocate.
Protect victims, serve communities.

This year’s theme is a powerful call to action—one that reminds us that supporting victims of crime requires more than awareness. It requires intentional listening, meaningful action, and unwavering advocacy.
Listening is the first and most important step in supporting victims and survivors. It means creating safe spaces where individuals are heard without judgment, believed without question, and respected in their experiences. When we truly listen, we validate survivors’ voices and recognize their strength. Listening builds trust, fosters healing, and ensures that services are guided by the real needs of those impacted by crime.
Listening must be followed by action. Action means providing trauma-informed services, connecting victims to resources, strengthening partnerships, and working to remove barriers within systems. It means responding quickly and compassionately when someone reaches out for help. Action also includes educating our community, engaging stakeholders, and implementing policies that prioritize victim safety and dignity.
Advocacy ensures that victims’ rights are upheld and their voices are represented in the criminal justice process and beyond. It means standing alongside survivors as they navigate complex systems. It also means promoting policies, funding, and community responses that center victims’ needs. Advocacy challenges stigma, confronts injustice, and pushes for meaningful change so that no survivor feels alone or unseen.
When we protect victims, we strengthen entire communities. Safety, justice, and healing are not individual concerns—they are collective responsibilities. By listening, acting, and advocating, we create communities where survivors are supported, rights are honored, and prevention becomes possible.
This National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, we recommit ourselves to ensuring every victim is heard, every voice matters, and every community stands together in support of healing and justice.

Individuals with disabilities experience violence and abuse at significantly higher rates than the general population. In fact, research shows they are more than twice as likely to experience violent crime.

Barriers such as dependence on caregivers, communication challenges, and lack of accessible resources can make it harder to report abuse or seek help.

The Hayes Foundation is committed to raising awareness, supporting prevention efforts, and ensuring individuals with disabilities have access to safe, supportive communities.

Everyone deserves to live free from violence. 💜

At The Hayes Foundation, our hearts are heavy as we reflect on the tragic homicide investigation in Polk County. Cases like this are a heartbreaking reminder of one of the most dangerous times in an abusive relationship: when a survivor is preparing to leave or has just left.

Leaving is often not the end of the danger — it can be the moment when violence escalates. Abuse is rooted in power and control, and when that control is threatened, the risk of serious harm or death can increase significantly.

This is why survivor safety planning, community awareness, and access to support services are so critical. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please know that help is available and no one should have to face this alone.
