School is starting, and that means more students, school buses, parents, pedestrians, and cyclists on our roads.

As everyone gets back into the school routine, Grand Lake Fire reminds our community that safe driving is an important part of keeping our kids and our first responders safe.

𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬. Stop when required and never pass a stopped bus with its red lights flashing.

𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬. Children may not always be predictable, especially near bus stops, crosswalks, and neighborhood streets.

𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞. Rushing to school, work or an appointment isn’t worth the risk.

𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐯𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦. If you see emergency lights or hear sirens, slow down, move over when possible, and allow first responders to get through safely.

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬. School drop-off and pick-up can mean unexpected stops, congestion, and pedestrians.

Let’s all do our part to make getting to and from school safe for everyone.

When you see our crews training, you're seeing our commitment to keeping both our firefighters and our community safe.

Recently Grand Lake Fire spent time working through MAYDAY training—practicing what to do if a firefighter becomes lost, trapped, or injured on the fireground. These realistic scenarios help us improve our communication, problem-solving, and rescue skills so we're prepared for the moments that matter most.

We hope we never have to use these skills in a real emergency, but we're committed to training for the worst so we can provide the best service to the Grand Lake community.

Grand Lake Fire recently welcomed Shining Stars for a station visit! Our crew enjoyed showing everyone around the station, including our fire engines, aerial apparatus, water hoses, and other firefighting equipment. Thank you for visiting and spending time with us—we hope you had as much fun learning about fire safety at our department as we had hosting you!

Active and former Grand County first responders are invited to attend Service, Identity & Serenity, a free, all-inclusive retreat at Shadowcliff Mountain Lodge & Retreat Center in Grand Lake, September 24–26, 2026.
Open to:
• Fire
• EMS
• Law Enforcement
• Dispatch
• Search & Rescue
• Ski Patrol
The retreat features experienced first responder speakers and peer supporters, outdoor recreation, lodging, meals, and opportunities for confidential discussion and connection with others who understand the unique challenges of the profession.
Participation is confidential, and space is limited to approximately 14 attendees.

We are deeply saddened to share the names of our fellow firefighters Emily Barker, 38, USFS, Nick Hutcherson, 27, USFS and Sydney Watson, 27, USWFS who faced the ultimate sacrifice. Our hearts go to their family members, fire family and friends at this time of loss. Their names will echo throughout every station, every hall and every fire truck for years to come.

An act of courage peaks in those who make the choice to leave their friends and families to fight a true test of Mother Nature. We protect, we serve and we fight.

Currently, we have multiple parties deployed to do exactly that. Those deployed are,

Yesterday, June 27, 2026, we lost three of America's bravest. Three U.S. Wildland Fire Service and U.S. Forest Service firefighters were killed, and two more were seriously injured, when a fast-moving wildfire overran their position along the Colorado-Utah border. They deployed their emergency shelters fighting for us and three of them did not come home.

Here in Grand County, we know this grief in a deeply personal way. The East Troublesome Fire of 2020 forever changed this community. We watched fire move faster than anyone thought possible. We lost homes, we lost land, and we nearly lost so much more. We know better than most what fire can do.

That is why we are asking every single person in this community, with all the urgency we have: PLEASE follow Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. No campfires. No charcoal grills. No fireworks. No outdoor burning of any kind. One spark in these conditions is all it takes.

These three heroes gave everything. The least we can do is make sure their sacrifice isn't compounded by a preventable fire in our own backyard.

Rest in peace to our fallen. Prayers for the injured and for all who loved them.

🔥 The Grand County Sheriff's Office is advising residents and visitors that Grand County has transitioned to a Very High Fire Danger Level, and Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect. Due to dry forest conditions and predicted weather patterns, wildfire risk has been significantly elevated.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, a “Very High” danger level indicates the following:
Easy Ignition: Fires will start easily from most causes.
Rapid Spread: Fires spread quickly and increase in intensity immediately after ignition.
Extreme Behavior: Small fires can rapidly become large incidents, exhibiting extreme fire behavior such as long-distance spotting and fire whirls.
Control Challenges: These fires are highly difficult to control and often result in larger, longer-lasting suppression efforts.
Three Action Steps to Protect Our Community
Do not wait for an emergency to act. Please take these three proactive steps to ensure your safety and protect Grand County:

As of...🕛👀Right now! Grand County has entered Stage 1 Fire Restrictions.
What Stage One Restrictions Mean:

Under Stage One Restrictions, open fires in Grand County are prohibited outside of developed recreation sites, meaning dispersed campfires in forested areas are not permitted.

Please note that each municipality (town) within Grand County retains the authority to implement its own fire restrictions as determined by local government.

Information Line: The Grand County Fire Restrictions recorded phone line is 970-725-3852.

Current Status: View up-to-date restrictions at www.GCEmergency.com.

Enforcement: Our goal is voluntary compliance as we all do our part to prevent wildfires. To report a fire restriction violation, please contact the Grand County Communications Center at 970-725-3311. For your safety, please do not personally address violations; allow our deputies to handle the situation.

Penalty: A violation of Grand County Fire Restrictions is punishable by a $1,000.00 fine for each separate offense.

Prohibited Activities & Uses
The following activities are strictly prohibited under Stage One Fire Restrictions:
· Open Fires: Building, maintaining, attending, or using an open fire outside of a developed recreation site.
· Smoking: Smoking outdoors, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed campground or picnic area, or while stopped in an area at least six feet in diameter that is barren of all combustible materials.
· Chainsaws: Operating a chainsaw without a USDA- or SAE-approved spark-arresting device properly installed and in working order.
· Welding/Torches: Welding or operating torches with an open flame, except in an area at least ten feet in diameter that is barren of all combustible materials.
· Incendiary Devices: Using explosive or incendiary devices (excluding permissible fireworks).

Allowed Activities & Uses
The following activities are permitted under Stage One Fire Restrictions:
· Developed Sites: Open fires in developed campgrounds (with fees and hosts) or picnic areas featuring permanently constructed fire grates and/or charcoal grills.
· Stoves/Grills: Fires contained within liquid- or gas-fueled stoves, lanterns, heating devices, and wood pellet grills/stoves.
· Private Residences: Open fires at private residences within permanent or portable outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, chimineas, and/or grills.
· Fireworks: Permissible fireworks according to state statute, as well as permitted, professional fireworks displays within Grand County.
