Kent County Recycling & Waste

Kent County Recycling & Waste Kent County Department of Public Works (DPW) manages recycling and waste in Kent County.

The Kent County MI Department of Public Works operates a Materials Recovery Facility that sorts recycling from curbside bins and drop-off recycling centers and prepares it to be sold to processors and brokers. The new Kent County Recycling & Education Center opened in the summer of 2010 and drastically changed the way recyclables are processed in Kent County, MI. The new facility, designed for 'si

ngle stream recycling', allows recyclers to mix their paper, plastic bottles, glass jars and metal cans together. Changes in technology and more working space in the new facility will enable more recyclables to be sorted in a shorter amount of time. The new Kent County Recycling & Education Center:
Sorts through 18 tons of mixed recyclables per hour (compared to just 4-6 tons per hour previously)
Operates 6 hours per day (instead of the previous 13 hour shifts)
Sorts 108 tons of recyclables per day (compared to 40-50 tons per day at the old facility)

The Recycling & Education Center is open for public observation on Mondays afternoons. Guided tours for groups of 10 or more can be scheduled by contacting us on Facebook, by emailing [email protected] or by calling (616) 336-4358. The Department also has staff that promote recycling and activities that minimize waste. This program is called "Resource Recovery" and the staff work to educate residents about recycling, offer resources that will assist residents in recycling and promote other waste reduction activities. These staff members also provide tours at the Recycling & Education Center and other solid waste facilities operated by the Kent County MI Department of Public Works.

We want to thank the Plainfield Township Fire Department, all assisting agencies, and our staff for their quick response last night in putting out a fire at our North Kent Transfer Station. Fortunately, nobody was injured and the damage is minimal. The fire was controlled and put out within an hour of it starting.

The cause is still being investigated but we believe it was likely caused by a lithium-ion battery. These batteries should never be thrown in your trash or recycling and should be taken somewhere to be properly disposed of. When lithium-ion batteries end up in the trash or recycling, they can be crushed and damaged during collection and processing. This can cause them to spark and start fires in collection trucks, at transfer stations, in recycling facilities, and at landfills. Lithium-ion battery fires are becoming something waste workers encounter all too often. They put workers at risk, damage equipment, and can disrupt waste and recycling operations.

Through our SafeChem program, we have five convenient locations throughout the county where residents can bring lithium-ion batteries and other household hazardous waste for proper disposal. Visit kentcountymi.gov/safechem to find the locations and hours.

The posted videos show the fire burning inside the North Kent Transfer Station. See Plainfield Township Fire Department's post for full details about the firefighting response.
